Puppy Passengers: A New Car For Dog Lovers

HOPKINS, Minn. (WCCO) ― For many people, dogs are a part of the family. Some never leave home without them. Now, a local car dealership hopes to cash in on that idea with the 2010 Honda Element.

"They have come up with the Element dog friendly package," said Hopkins Honda Assistant New Car Sales Manager Heidi Colby.

Hopkins Honda put the model in the repair shop waiting room to entice customers who bring their dogs along while their cars get fixed.

"If the dog doesn't want to climb in on its own or has hip issues, whatever the case, it can climb right up [the ramp]," said Colby.

The ramp folds easily into the back beneath a mesh dog carrier with a 3-inch thick padded bed.

Inside the Element, a fan is equipped so dogs don't miss sticking their heads out the window.

"I think it's a great set up," said dog owner Paul Lyons.

The car even has a doggy dish holder.

"In the corner there so it doesn't spill or anything, huh? That's fantastic ," said Lyons.

Overall, dog owners are pleased with the Element's dog-friendly set up.

"I would admire the fact the company thought enough to do it," said dog owner B.J. Alexander.

The dog friendly package on the Honda Element is about $1,200 installed, bringing the total cost of the car to about $23,000.
