Homeless Shelter To Remain Open During RNC

ST. PAUL (AP) ― A St. Paul homeless shelter that feeds 300 people a day will remain open during the Republican National Convention despite being a stone's throw from the arena.

Local Catholic Charities chief executive John Estrem says the decision to keep the shelter open is in the best interest of the clients served by the Dorothy Day Center.

The shelter is near the Xcel Energy Center, where security will be tight and protesters will be trying to get close during the convention in early September.

Estrem says it was important to keep a familiar place and a range of services available to the homeless people that depend on them.

A top convention official, Maria Cino, says organizers applaud the charity's decision. Cino says convention participants are expected to volunteer at the shelter as part of local outreach projects that are now routine at national political conventions.

According to GOP.com, the Republican Party was born in the early 1850's by anti-slavery activists and individuals who believed that government should grant western lands to settlers free of charge. In 1860, Abraham Lincoln was elected as the first Republican Party president.
