Gas-Powered Generator Blamed In CO Poisoning

(WCCO) More is known about the three people who died Thursday night in their home from carbon monoxide poisoning. Fumes coming from a gas-powered generator running in the basement are to blame for their deaths.

Forty-four-year old Harold Barnett, his son Tyrell, and a family friend all died in the home on the 1600 block of Girard Avenue North in Minneapolis. It's a loss that could have been prevented.

People gathered all day long at the home where it happened to mourn and remember a father, his son and his friend.

"It's real sad that three people lose their lives, especially his son," said Earl Lee Wells, one of Barnett's friends.

Tyrell's friends and relatives added so many names to the memorial card, a cross was erected for more condolences.

"It just feels wrong. It don't even feel true right now," said Tyron Jenkins, Tyrell's cousin.

Relatives say the popular eighth grader at Nellie Stone Johnson School loved to play sports and go to the library.

"Tyrell was just a fantastic young man. He had so many friends. He was always happy. He was a hard worker. He was well-liked by staff," said Mark Bonine, the school's principal.

Utility service to the home was cut off, so Barnett was using the gas-powered generator for electricity.

"I noticed it about four months ago and told the individual to turn it off, not to use it, it was dangerous," recalled landlord Gregory Wilson.

Fire investigators said the CO level was so high it caused unconsciousness or death within a half hour.
