State Plans Gypsy Moth Control Monday

ST. PAUL (AP) ― The state Agriculture Department will spray for gypsy moths in Winona and Houston counties starting Monday, if the weather cooperates.

Just over 37,000 acres in the two counties will be sprayed. The largest area will be nearly 14,000 acres in northwestern Houston County.

Each of the areas will be treated once by airplane with pesticide that is deemed safe by the Environmental Protection Agency.

The treatment has no known health effects for humans or pets, but to avoid it residents may wish to stay indoors during the spraying.

The Ag Department says the residue will not damage a vehicle's finish, but residents might want to park their vehicles indoors to avoid having to wash it after the spraying.

Compared to emerald ash borer, gypsy moth infestations are easier to detect because the moth caterpillars do their damage out in the open instead of under the bark.
