Three teenagers have been arrested for attacking Twin Cities cyclists on the Midtown Greenway.
The teenagers hit the cyclists with rocks and bits of concrete as they biked under the 13th Avenue bridge Tuesday evening. The teens were arrested and face possible charges of second degree assault.
This is the second incident on the greenway in the past two months. The last robbery of a cyclists happened in late May.
Last year there were eight attacks on the midtown greenway in 45 days. The numbers have sparked police to partner with the Midtown Greenway Coalition. They pair volunteers with police officers who watch out for anything suspicious on the Greenway.
"We kind of teach each other on both ends of what bicyclists need and what the police need to make the Greenway more safer," said Nate Kerr with the Midtown greenway coalition.
Kerr says so far more than 50 volunteers are working with police.
"Mostly we are just adding a set of eyes and ears and more people on the Greenway so that things won't happen," said Kerr.
Police hope their increased presence as well as the help from volunteers will make the trail a safer place to exercise and commute.
