Gray Wolf Found Dead Along Highway
Winona, Minn. (AP) ―
A gray wolf was found dead in an unlikely place: along U.S. Highway 61 near Winona, Minn.
Gray wolves are rare in southeastern Minnesota and are protected throughout the state by the federal Endangered Species Act.
U.S. Fish and Wildlife biologist Ron Refsnider says the wolf probably wandered into Minnesota from Wisconsin, where wolf packs can be found near Fort McCoy and the Black River State Forest.
The Fish and Wildlife Service has proposed delisting the wolf in Wisconsin, Michigan and Minnesota because it has exceeded recovery goals for several years.
