Good Question: Who Is The Voice At MSP Airport?
by Ben Tracy
(WCCO)
Passing through the Minneapolis St. Paul International Airport people will hear a sound that is distinctively un-Minnesotan. A voice that sounds more British than Bemidji to most. So whose voice is it and is it just international flavor for our international airport?
Linda Torgeson is the face behind the voice. She's lived in Minnesota for 30 years and has worked at the airport for about 20 years.
"For years people have told me you've got a nice voice why don't you do something with it, I went oh can't be bothered you know and I just ignored it and ignored it," said Torgeson.
However, when the airport needed new voice recordings Torgeson's boss knew of one that would rise about the rest.
"People listen to it and it is something that catches their attention," said Torgeson.
"I hear the British lady and I know I'm back in Minnesota," said an airport visitor.
People can hear her voice in the terminal, in the parking ramp and on the tram. Torgeson does have a favorite line:
"'Parents in the interest of safety don't allow your children to play on moving sidewalks, escalators or baggage carousels' and you know what they do!" she said.
Torgeson is finally used to being talked about while she's talking. She said she has overheard people saying she sounds "hot". Even though she is from Minnesota she has never caught herself saying "you betcha".
Torgeson recently retired from her job at the airport to do voice-overs professionally. She's done commercials for airlines, hotels, pharmaceuticals, and even political campaigns.
