Thousands Turn Out For Gay Rights Rally At Capitol

(WCCO) One of the largest rallies of the year took place at the State Capitol Thursday.

Thousands of people showed up to support what organizers call human rights for gays and lesbians.

Gays and lesbians said there is still widespread discrimination in Minnesota and across the country and they are calling for new laws protecting what they say are civil right.

They want the legislature to pass local government health benefits for same sex partners, high school sex education programs, and family leave benefits for domestic partners.

"I look forward to a country that doesn't allow people to deny me housing because of who God made me to be. I also look forward to a country where I can marry my partner of 17 years, and I can enjoy all of what that means in this country and that is not denied me because of who God made me to be," said Dan Karslake, a filmmaker.

Gay marriage is a simmering issue at the Capitol and on the campaign trail but there is currently no attempt to make it legal or to ban it in the constitution.
