St. Francis Teens Headed To 'Grammy' Music Camp

ST. FRANCIS, Minn. (WCCO) ― It is not your usual "how I spent my summer vacation." Two local teenagers are heading to Los Angeles next week for Grammy Camp. That's right, Grammy, as in the music awards.

The St. Francis high school students will be learning all about music from the best in the industry.

"People don't really take us seriously when we say we want to be musicians," said Ellie Perleberg.

However, they will now that Ellie and her friend Jessica Turner are headed to Hollywood to study with the stars.

And both have never really studied music.

"We taught ourselves in the last, what, five years?" said Ellie.

"I have only been like playing for two years actually," said Jessica.

The girls have been best friends since they were three years old. They love music and going to concerts together. They were amazed to be picked out of a pool of 1600 applicants to join about 80 other students from across the country.

"It's going to be my first time like going somewhere without my family," said Jessica.

"It's just me and Jessica, on a plane," said Ellie laughing.

The camp features guest artists and music recording professionals. Also, the campers learn about promotion, music reviewing and performance with different instruments.

"The tuition was $1,900? And I got some financial aid. But you didn't right?" asked Ellie.

"Nope," said Jessica.

"So we're selling CDs," said Ellie, "We made a little demo in my room and like we play at the school art show."

"Save the Girl" is just one of the songs they wrote and perform on that CD.

If you want to hear "Save the Girl" by Ellie and Jessica in its entirety, we've made a little music video you can watch here.
