Minnesotans Prepare For Fishing Opener

(WCCO) Anglers across Minnesota are getting ready for the big fishing opener. Gov. Tim Pawlenty will have his annual opener at Pelican Lake.

At Joe's Sporting Goods in Roseville, Minn., the mood can best be compared to Christmas Eve. People are very excited to get back out on the water for the first time in months.

They have been checking out the latest and greatest, including GPS fish finders, which have been hot-sellers this year.

Managers at Joe's said many of their customers are planning on going out Saturday morning and will fish on opening weekend.

Most plan to continue with their routines or family traditions, including traveling up north, even though gas prices are high. Some did say that they may not go out of town as frequently.

The Dorbratz brothers are heading out of town this weekend for their parents' cabin in Lindstrom, Minn.

"It's something we do every year, my brothers and me," said Brandon Dorbratz. "We've been doing it for the last 3 years now, so it's something we always get to do."

Dorbratz said the gas prices don't matter, saying he would go there anyway.

"They work hard all year and they figure that they just kind of earned this, I think," said Roger Rucci with Joe's Sporting Goods. "And I do have to agree with that. We work very hard all year so let's kind of treat ourselves and they are taking inventories at home and to see whatever they are kind of lacking."

Rucci said a lot of people were looking for rod and reel combinations.
