Dangers Of Illegal, And Legal, Fireworks

ST. PAUL (WCCO) ― Fourth of July celebrations are starting for many people and a lot of those celebrations will include fireworks. So the St. Paul Fire Department demonstrated which fireworks are legal and illegal in Minnesota, and what can happen if you're not careful.

If the firework explodes or flies, it's illegal in Minnesota.

Pointed in the wrong direction, an illegal roman candle can easily start a fire. However, even legal fireworks can cause problems if you're not careful; sparklers can be hotter than ovens.

As the fire department demonstrates, the burn marks on a mannequin's hand could easily be your kids.

"It's very difficult to take care of these patients," sad Dr. Douglas Brunette has seen many of these injuries at Hennepin County Medical Center's emergency room.

"Many of them are young children, the injuries are painful. They can result in permanent disability and permanent disfigurement," said Brunette.

And that's something your kids could have to live with for the rest of their lives.

In a national study, between 1990 and 2003 more than 85,000d children were injured by fireworks and that's only children; it doesn't even count the adults.

The St. Paul firefighters also said to make sure to douse fireworks in a bucket of water before you throw them out. You don't want to start a fire in the garbage can.
