A request for Minnesota hunters this fall -- don't transport firewood.
The state Agriculture Department is trying to prevent the spread of emerald ash borers into Minnesota.
The department notes than millions of ash trees have been destroyed in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and Ontario by the beetle and its larvae. The bug bores into the bark of the tree, depriving it of nutrients and eventually killing it.
The borer has been migrating toward Minnesota, but hasn't arrived here yet.
An ag department official says the emerald ash borer is known for hitching a ride on transported firewood, then destroying ash trees in a new area.
Hunters are asked to buy firewood when they reach their destination and burn it all on site. And if hunters buy firewood, they should know its origin and supplier.
