Fire Kills 1,200 Pigs In South-Central Minnesota

WALDORF, Minn. (AP) ― A hog farm fire has killed about 1,200 pigs in south-central Minnesota.

The blaze broke out Tuesday night and consumed two of three barns about four miles southeast of Waldorf, in Waseca County.

Chris Sonnek, part owner of the Superior Pork facility, says firefighters were able to save most of the third barn.

There were about 2,400 pigs at the sow farrowing facility. About half were saved and the remaining 1,200 were lost in the fire.

About 20 fire departments responded to the blaze.

A damage estimate was not available. The fire marshal was expected to arrive Wednesday to start an investigation.
