Amateur Filmmakers Must Make Film In 24 Hours

(WCCO) When the clock struck 10:00 Friday night, hundreds of filmmakers got the green light to begin a tough task. They have just 24 hours to create an original short film.

Thirty-two teams spread out across Minneapolis Friday night. Paul, Ben and Kristin created the team, 'Cut! Coffee Anyone?'

"It's kind of inspired by the fact that we have the potential to do an all-nighter and we are going to need some fuel to keep us going through out this competition," said team leader Ben Swanson.

As the team gears up for a night of filming, they go over the rules. At 10:00 p.m. Friday they were e-mailed the theme "saving."

Saving has to be the theme for their short film.

They also got a surprise that requires them to include a scene in which an actor is knocking on a door. With those criteria they have to create a short film that can't any be any longer than four minutes. The film has to be completed by 10:00 p.m. Saturday night.

The film race is rolling in 16 other cities across the country. Winners from each state compete against each other for $35,000 worth of prizes. Paul, Ben and Kristin know a lot can happen in 24 hours despite a lack of resources.

"I'd say we have professional creativity and amateur equipment," said Swanson.
