A ferry started running between Winona and Fountain City, Wisconsin Monday, providing a way to cross the Mississippi River while the Minnesota Department of Transportation decides what to do with the Winona Bridge.
As they boarded the boats, some commuters actually sounded more like sightseers.
"We're like living on an island," said Dianne Thompson of Fountain City. "Just like you're in San Francisco. Go down to the river, get on the ferry, go across. It's just awesome."
Of course, the ferries only carry people, not cars. The Mississippi Explorer usually runs as a tour boat, and the Island Girl is a dinner cruiser.
"This is a 149 passenger dinner cruiser," said Al Poser of Skipper Liner, which owns it. "It's a very sophisticated vessel, radar, GPS, all the correct tools. And so far, it's working very well."
The five-minute ride costs $5 per day, or $15 per week, saving time and money compared to the 65-mile detour.
"We did that yesterday," said Beth Degallier of Fountain City. "We went up through Wabasha, and that took us about an hour and 20 minutes."
Instead, they take shuttle busses to the dock, board the boats, and make the most of their new situation.
"I just think this is awesome," said Thompson. "New experience, brings people together, cuts down on the gas and all the emissions in the air. I think it's awesome."
Until the bridge is back, the boats will provide a crucial link for people who live in Wisconsin and work in Winona.
The ferries cross the river every 20 minutes.
You can't bring a bike on the boats, yet. Officials said they may reconsider that decision once they see how much room there is.
