A federal grant is expected to help the already bicycle-friendly Minneapolis become even more attractive to bicyclists.
Bike Walk Twin Cities is set to provide $1.75 million to the Minneapolis Bike Share Program, which aims to create the largest municipal bike-share system in the nation.
Minneapolis is currently ranked second in the nation for bicyclists, according to the U.S. Census.
The total cost of the program is estimated at $3.3 million. Ultimately, it's expected to make about 1,000 bicycles available in downtown Minneapolis, as well as Uptown and the University of Minnesota campus.
Bikers could either pay $5 for a single-day's use of one of the program's bikes, or pay about $50 for a season pass.
Kiosks are expected to open by the end of 2009.
The grant money is also expected to help pay for construction on bikeways along 17th Avenue and Bloomington Avenue, stretching all the way from 24th Street South to the Minneapolis-Richfield border.
Also, some of the grant funds are earmarked for pedestrian enhancements on 5th Street Northeast and 7th Street North.
