Minnesota Remembers Fallen Firefighters

ST. PAUL (AP) ― Half-staff flags at the Capitol will mark Minnesota Fallen Firefighters Memorial Day on Sunday.

Gov. Tim Pawlenty is encouraging Minnesotans to lower their flags at home, too.

Firefighters Memorial Day began after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. The Legislature and Pawlenty enacted a law earlier this year to observe the day in Minnesota on the first Sunday in October.

Since 1881, 187 Minnesota firefighters have died in the line of duty.

Among them was Jeremy Jylka of the Pine City Fire Department, who died in April 2008 while responding to a grass fire. Jylka will be honored among 122 firefighters at a national memorial service in Maryland.
