Community Honors Everyday Caped Crusaders

On Sunday, 15 everyday champions received superstar treatment at Wolfe Park. They were recognized as community heroes for all they do for children.

Some caped crusaders took center stage as a group of ordinary folks were thanked for the extraordinary things they do for children in St. Louis Park.
On Sunday, 15 everyday champions received superstar treatment at Wolfe Park. They were recognized as community heroes for all they do for children.
One of those superheroes was George Bickham who works with elementary school kids at an after school program.
"I'm an underdog. So I appreciate everything that goes into it. But the recognition really belongs to the students who we work with," said Bickham.
All of the heroes are depicted with their super powers in a Champions Coloring Books, created by a local artist. More than 120 people were nominated for their crusading work to help kids and their development.
"They may not realize it but their high school principal or their police officer, or a teacher, or a bank teller for that matter really are doing things to try to grow kids in a positive way," said Tom Harmening, Co-Chair of Children First.
Children had the chance to get the heroes autographs and take pictures with them during a community ice cream social. But this will be more than a fleeting memory because these heroes will continue to make lives brighter for children everyday.
"I would very much look up to these people because they are very good people. I'm just amazed at all the people who help out in the community. I think it's just a great group," said 10-year-old Justin Secor.
The coloring book and superhero recognition are part of St. Louis Park's Children First program that promotes positive development and support for the area's kids.
