Environmentalists Worry Over Minn. Cuts

ST. PAUL (AP) ― Environmental advocates may have less to fear from state budget cuts thanks to a new sales tax voters passed last month to boost investments in natural resources.

But some worry that their new money could be tempting for the people who have to reduce state spending. The director of a coalition that pushed the amendment says advocates will be watching closely to make sure cuts are fair.

Steve Morse of the Environmental Partnership says the strong vote for the amendment shows people are willing to be taxed to pay for worthy government spending.

Gov. Tim Pawlenty and legislative environmental chairs say the new money won't get raided. Sen. Ellen Anderson, a Democrat from St. Paul, says it's important to make sure the new money supplements resource spending instead of being used to replace cuts in existing programs.
