Report: More Unemployed Than Jobs Available In MN
(WCCO)
A new report said there are 2 1/2 people looking for work per job available. That's exactly the opposite of eight years ago when 2 1/2 jobs waited for unemployed Minnesotans.
The study is by the non-profit Jobs Now Coalition. The group found that compared with eight years ago, the number of people looking for work in Minnesota is up 92 percent and the number of jobs available is down more than 68 percent.
The group found that even the number of low paying jobs is shrinking.
"Until recently we were at least creating a large number of pretty lousy jobs. Now we're not creating those any longer either," said Kevin Ristau with the Jobs Now Coalition.
At Nina's Coffee Shop in St. Paul, Cynthia French was surfing for job listings on the Internet. She has a bachelor's degree in international relations and a master's in fine arts and writing, and has been trying for months to find a good job in arts marketing.
"I find that with every job that I apply for there's probably at least 50 to 100 people applying for the same job," she said.
French is trying to stay upbeat.
"I found a job this week so far that I am going to apply for," she added.
So she will put in yet another application and hope she can beat the tough odds for those looking for work.
The
Jobs Now Coalition has a Web site with information on the kinds of jobs available in all 87 counties in Minnesota.
