Minn. Looking For Evidence Of Emerald Ash Borers

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) ― Minnesota inspectors are looking for evidence of the tree-eating emerald ash borer in the southeastern tip of the state.

An infestation of the small, metallic-green beetle was discovered last week near the Wisconsin town of Victory along the Mississippi River. It was the ash borer's first appearance in western Wisconsin.

After the discovery was announced Tuesday, Minnesota Department of Agriculture officials headed to Houston County to begin a visual assessment. They are checking for diseased ash trees along state and local roads and plan to inspect river islands Thursday.

Minnesota has an estimated 900 million ash trees in towns, cities and forests that could be at risk. To protect trees from invasive pests like emerald ash borers, officials urge people not to transport firewood, where the invaders can hide.
