Minn. Watches As Emerald Ash Borers Spread In Wis.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) ― Minnesota officials are on alert after Wisconsin discovered emerald ash borers just across the Minnesota border.

The emerald ash borer is a beetle that has killed millions of ash trees in 10 eastern states.

Tuesday's announcement marks its first appearance in western Wisconsin. The infestation is near the town of Victory, on the Mississippi River, just 1 mile southeast of the Minnesota-Iowa border.

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture has sent inspectors to Houston County to see if the infestation has spread into southeastern Minnesota.

Minnesota has an estimated 900 million ash trees that could be at risk. To protect them, officials urge residents not to buy firewood from outside of Minnesota, and don't bring firewood along on a camping trip.
