Federal Funds Could Help Fight Ash Borer In Minn.

ST. PAUL (AP) ― U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar says Minnesota is scheduled to get federal resources to help slow the spread of the emerald ash borer.

Klobuchar is on the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry. She says the federal Agriculture Department will provide the funding.

She says the department is working with the state to settle on a plan to fight the tree-killing insect.

Klobuchar expects about $771,000 in federal funding, with about $750,000 for survey work and the rest for cutting down infected trees.

The emerald ash borer was discovered in St. Paul in May, sparking fears that the state's ash forests could be decimated.

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture Web site offers a guide to spotting the emerald ash borer. If you think your tree is infested, you should report it. The "Arrest the Pest" hotline number is 651-201-6684 in the metro area or 1-888-545-6684 in greater Minnesota.
