Students Build Garden In Area Destroyed By Fire

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) ― A neighborhood eyesore in northeast Minneapolis is about to get new life. Four years ago, there was a major fire at Lowry Avenue Northeast and Central Avenue Northeast.

Flames raced through part of a block and destroyed three buildings that included a beauty shop, an alterations store and about a dozen upstairs apartments.

Saturday, Edison High School students are made a community garden there. About 50 of them built the raised flower beds that students will take care of during the growing season.

They'll be out every week pulling weeds and next year they'll plant flowers there again. The school says learning about community service will help the students in the future.

"With scholarships and with colleges, they're all looking now for a more well-rounded student where they have community service hours. They're just getting out there and making a difference in their community," said Edison High School biology teacher Holly Siasoco.

The students will plant the donated flowers on Tuesday because they were a little worried about possible frost Saturday night.
