Man Lost In River Pulled From Lake Superior

TOFTE, Minn. (WCCO) ― The Cook County Sheriff's Office says the body of a man who drowned near Tofte, Minn. has been recovered.

The office had responded to a 911 call Saturday evening from a witness who saw 45-year-old Ari Benjamin Sommerfield of Ramsey, Minn. swimming in the river when he was carried away in the current.

Early Sunday afternoon Sommerfield's body was pulled from Lake Superior. No foul play is suspected. The Sheriff's Office says the Temperance River near Lake Superior is a very dangerous area to swim, and many people have drowned there.

The Cook County Sheriff's Office and their Response Unit, Tofte First Responders, the Department of Natural Resources, the U.S. Coast Guard, Lake County rescue divers, St. Louis County Search and Rescue and Cook County Ambulance all responded to the emergency.
