Colleen and Anthony Hauser have said they want to treat their 13-year-old son Daniel with something more natural than chemotherapy for his Hodgkin's lymphoma.
Nearly 15 years ago, WCCO-TV brought you the story of a young boy whose parents say his cancer was cured by holistic medicine and they wanted to again share their message of healing.
"What I was told it's one of the deadliest childhood cancers that you can be diagnosed with," recalled mother Leanne Woodland.
Her 2-year-old, Drew, was diagnosed with stage four neuroblastoma.
"We had some really scary days," she said.
Drew went through chemotherapy, but doctors couldn't remove the remaining tumor. He was sent home and given six months to live. That was 16 years ago.
"I had my whole funeral planned for me and everything," Drew said.
Friday night, Drew graduated from high school in Spooner, Wis. He's moving to Montana to go to college. His mom says it was complementary and alternative therapies that healed him.
"We knew that in Drew's case we had to turbo-boost his immune system," she said.
For months, they pumped vitamins, fresh fruits and vegetables into a tube in his stomach.
"I guess it had to work because here I am today," Drew said.
Back then, doctors at Children's Hospital couldn't say it was the nutritional supplements that cured Drew. They couldn't say it wasn't either.
Drew's diagnosis was much different than what Daniel is dealing with. The missing boy actually has a more treatable, beatable cancer.
This family believes it was balance that saved their son after cancer was supposed to kill him.
"Pretty lucky and pretty happy because there's a lot I want to do still," Drew said.
Doctors say Drew's case is extraordinary. They say in some rare cases it is possible for neuroblastoma to shrink itself.
Doctors say some forms of cancer respond very well to chemotherapy and Hodgkin's lymphoma is one of them.
