Dog Missing After Fatal Crash Found Thin, But Well

DICKINSON, N.D. (WCCO) ― A Minnesota family's dog that went missing after a fatal crash in southwestern North Dakota has turned up at a Bible camp.

Ranger, a brown and white springer spaniel, ran off after the Aug. 25 crash that killed 60-year-old Jerry Roper of Lake City, Minn., and injured his wife, Celeste.

The dog turned up Thursday at Badlands Ministries near Medora -- wet, cold and a little thin. It was taken to a Dickinson veterinarian for treatment. Ranger lost about 25 percent of his body weight and had sores from cockleburs but was otherwise unharmed. Veterinarian Kim Brummond expects the dog to be fine.

Rebecca Weist, the Ropers' daughter, says she cried when she heard that Ranger had been found. She says having him back helps somewhat ease the pain of losing her father.
