The public can now read a long-awaited environmental review of a proposed copper mine in northeastern Minnesota.
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have released a draft environmental impact statement on the proposed PolyMet mine near Hoyt Lakes.
The public can comment on the draft, and PolyMet says the final statement is due in the second quarter of 2010.
The proposed copper mine would be Minnesota's first. The mine also would produce nickel, platinum and other precious metals.
PolyMet says 400 permanent jobs would be created at the facility.
But environmental groups are concerned the mining could pollute water. PolyMet officials say the process will meet all standards and not harm the environment.
