Pawlenty Expects DFL To Propose Tax Hikes

ST. PAUL (AP) ― Gov. Tim Pawlenty says he expects the Democrats who control the Legislature to call for tax increases later this session.

The Republican governor says he expects them to spend a couple months criticizing his budget proposal first.

Pawlenty spoke Monday to a manufacturers' group in St. Paul, where he talked up his plan to cut business taxes.

The governor says Democrats might be able to avoid proposals for higher taxes if a huge amount of federal stimulus aid comes through. He says the federal piece is a major variable in the state's budget.

Legislative Democrats plan to hold hearings around the state on Pawlenty's budget later this month.
