Deputy Hit While Directing Traffic: Slow Down

(WCCO) A Minnesota sheriff's deputy badly hurt while directing traffic at a crash will do whatever it takes to go on patrol again. He's telling his story to get drivers to slow down and look around this winter.

Isanti County Sheriff's Deputy Chad Meyer doesn't remember much about Dec. 13. He was just going into work when the call came out for a crash along Highway 95 at about 4 p.m. The roads were wet and Meyer went to direct traffic.

"I don't remember exactly what I was doing. I remember going back to my squad car but after that it's a blank," Meyer said.

Fellow deputies told him what had happened. A woman driving a Cadillac flew past the accident scene and plowed into him. He rolled over the car and landed on the highway.

He has a broken fibula and tibia, dislocated shoulder, 30 stitches in his face and 12 staples in his head. Despite his scars, doctors expect Meyer to make a full recovery, but they can't say for sure what his future mobility may be.

"You just don't know what you have until it's gone," he said.

Meyer still feels lucky he can tell his story at all. He wants other drivers to slow down when they see flashing lights so his colleagues can be safe.

"If I can save one other person, one other cop, deputy, trooper from being hurt, this is worth it," Meyer said.

Meyer hopes to be back on the job in two months. He doesn't know when he'll be able to get back in the field.
