Making Thanksgiving dinner with her children has special meaning for Sara Gonzalez and her family. It was going to be their last meal together. Gonzalez was supposed to be deported from their home in St. Michael, Minn. to Mexico this week.
Instead of the sad day they expected, the family said they are very happy. They got word from immigration officials that Gonzalez can stay home.
"Her visa was extended for another year," explained Jennifer Avendano, Gonzalez's 14-year-old daughter.
"I would like to thank my church, Holy Rosary," said Jennifer, speaking for the family, "and the community that helped get signatures for my mom."
Gonzalez came legally to Minnesota nearly 20 years ago, but she didn't do the paperwork when her visa expired in 2001.
Her husband, Nixon Avendano and their six children are all U.S. citizens.
Gonzalez was deported two years ago. She was given special permission to return temporarily because her 6-year-old son Edwin has autism. She has to check in with an immigration office every month.
The family traveled to Washington, D.C. last month. They hope the immigration law is changed so Gonzalez can live here legally. They believe Sen. Al Franken helped to keep Gonzalez home this time.
"Al Franken, when we told him our story, he started crying," said Jennifer, "He just wanted to help us."
So around the dinner table Thursday, there are prayers of thanks and tears of joy. The family will be able to hold each other close for one more year.
"Gracias, Amen," said Nixon Avendano.
"Amen," said the family together.
