Man Dies After House Explodes Near Deerwood

DEERWOOD, Minn. (AP) ― A Northfield man is dead after an explosion at his Hamlet Lake cabin near Deerwood.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office said Bruce Rezak died early Saturday at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis.

The explosion and fire happened around 4 p.m. Friday about 2 1/2 miles southeast of Deerwood.

Deerwood Fire Chief John Taylor said it appeared the victim had been trying to light a hot water heater when the explosion occurred in the basement of the cabin.

Neighbor Carol Knutson said she ran out of her house after the explosion and saw Rezak and his dog on fire running out of the house.

The incident happened a day after an empty vacation home exploded in western Wisconsin.

At least five other cabins on Upper Turtle Lake were damaged.

The cause of that explosion remained under investigation.
