MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) ― In honor of long-time WCCO-TV reporter Darcy Pohland who died last week, Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak has declared Friday, March 12 Darcy Pohland Day.

At the age of 48 years old, Pohland passed away March 5. She had apparently died in her sleep. Her cause of death has not yet been determined.

Pohland has been a news reporter at WCCO for the last two decades. She was hired in 1986 after serving an internship at the station in the summer of 1983 at WCCO's Washington D.C. bureau.

"Darcy was a real pro as a journalist, and she was a friend," said Rybak. "She was a tough-minded reporter who asked tough questions, especially of former colleagues like me. I'll miss every single thing about her — except the really tough questions.

"She also loved Minneapolis — and as the outpouring of the last week has reminded us, Minneapolis loved her back."

The memorial will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Guthrie Theater, 818 South 2nd St. in Minneapolis.

In celebration of her life and the love she had for her alma mater -- the University of Minnesota -- those attending are asked to consider wearing gopher gear or school colors, maroon and gold.

Memorials are preferred to be sent to animal rescue organizations and to Courage Center, or a charity of choice.
