Danny Hauser To Remain Under Protective Order

(WCCO) A Brown County Judge refused a motion that would have lifted the child protection order put in place to make sure 13-year-old Daniel Hauser undergoes life saving chemotherapy treatments.

Judge John Rosenberg told Hauser's parents there is still adequate reason to keep their son under the care of child protective services while he continues his regimen of cancer treatments.

The process began last February when the Sleepy Eye farm family decided to end their son's chemo and opt instead for alternative treatments using natural remedies and supplements.

Then in May, the boy's mother, Colleen Hauser took her son and fled to California to avoid court ordered treatment. She and her husband were returned custody of Daniel after agreeing to follow doctor recommended treatments.

Barbara Gislason is the Hauser's attorney and said the couple continues to fear what the chemo treatments are doing to their son.

"I think it's fair to say that each time he gets chemo, he could die right that day from the chemotherapy," Gislason said.

The Hausers said that Danny is feeling worse today than he did before the treatments resumed. He is taking ginger tea to help fight the nauseating effects of the treatments as well as having massage and acupuncture.

He has lost between 10 and 13 pounds since the chemo resumed and has lost some of his blonde hair.

Brown County Attorney, Jim Olson opposed any lifting of the protection order.

"I am concerned that if we didn't have some kind of lever over her (Colleen Hauser's) head, we'd end up after doing the June 24th treatment just where we were after February -- they'd say no more and we would be right back in court again," said Olson.

Daniel Hauser attended the court hearing with his parents but decided to remain in a conference room while the proceedings took place.

He is scheduled for his next round of treatments on June 24 at Children's Hospital in Minneapolis.
