Volunteers Search For Missing Student's Cell Phone

ST. PAUL (WCCO) ― Hundreds of volunteers from missing University of St. Thomas student's hometown joined in a search in St. Paul on Thursday.

Dan Zamlen's father Dale was with a group of his friends who used metal detectors to look for Zamlen's missing cell phone. It's the same phone he was talking on when he disappeared almost two weeks ago.

Dale Zamlen said having so many friends help out during this tough time provided a lot of support.

"It is the kind of support that keeps you going everyday," Dale Zamlen told Caroline Lowe as she walked with him along the steep Mississippi River banks near St. Clair Avenue.

If searchers find Dan Zamlen's cell phone, it might provide some clues to what happened to the St. Thomas freshman who was last seen 10 days ago.

Dan's father said he doubts his son is in the river.

"I really don't have an instinct that Dan's down there, I really think he's gone. I really do. I think he is gone off the upper area up here," Dale Zamlen told Lowe.

Busloads of young volunteers poured into Hidden Falls Park to look for the missing student. The park is a couple miles south of St. Thomas. They also came from Dan's hometown and many knew him from high school. Chrystal Olson missed a second day of classes this week to help out in the search.

"I am kind of scared because I don't know if I want to find Dan, you know. I want to find him alive ... it's hard." she said.

The searchers were instructed to be very careful not to touch Dan's phone if they find it and be sure to call 911.

On Thursday night, the searchers will go door-to-door to homes in the area to again ask residents to check their property for any signs of the missing UST freshman.

The reward for information Zamlen has been doubled to $10,000.

Zamlen is 6-foot-1 and weighs 175 pounds. He was last seen wearing a dark blue and black fleece jacket, blue jeans and brown Dr. Marten shoes.
