Harriet the flamingo, a crowd favorite at Como Zoo for 39 years and medical celebrity for her long battle with cancer, has died. She was 47.
The zoo says Friday that in her final days, before she was euthanized March 26, the animal had trouble standing on one foot, lost her appetite and lost weight. Blood-work showed that she had a widespread infection and heart problems.
Harriet had undergone radiation treatments since 1998, when her right middle toe was amputated due to a cancerous growth. In 2002, cancer returned and her left middle toe was removed.
The zoo says Harriet was a celebrity in the world of animal medicine for her long battle with cancer.
The life span of a flamingo is usually about 25 years, but 50 years is not unusual.
