MN College Lockdown Prompts False Report Charges

(WCCO) A woman who reported seeing a man with a gun inside Saint Paul College and prompted a lockdown of the school in September, has been charged with falsely reporting the crime.

Charleeta Brown, 42, was charged on Monday.

Officers said that Brown reported to campus security on Sept. 23, 2009 that she was in an elevator in the school and she heard a man say that he was upset about his financial aid. She reported that he was talking on the phone and she saw the man grab a handgun from a ledge.

The campus was then put on lockdown while the Saint Paul Police SWAT Team was called to investigate and parts of the school were restricted for several hours.

Brown repeated her story to officers and investigators responding to the scene.

Police said during the course of the incident more than 40 officers responded.

When Brown was re-interviewed by police on Oct. 19, 2009 she admitted that she made a false report and that there had never been a man in the school with a gun.

"Even while this was a false report, Saint Paul College administrators and responding police personnel did exactly as they should - acting first in the safety interests of students and staff," St. Paul Police Chief John Harrington said in a news release. "Saint Paul College is a very safe school and the selfish actions of the person making these false claims should not be considered a reflection of the school's great students."
