Man Sentenced 20 Years After Woman's Murder

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) ― A man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for the 1989 stabbing death of 29-year-old Brenda Pikala.

Last September, Alfred Lee Moen was charged with the murder of Pikala, who was stabbed to death under a footbridge near Minnehaha Creek two decades ago this month at the intersection of Minnehaha Parkway and 3rd Avenue South.

When he was charged with Pikala's death, Moen was already in prison for violating probation on a drunken driving charge, was connected to the case thanks to DNA evidence.

According to the charges, tests performed on evidence retrieved from the scene of the crime and skin samples found underneath the victim's fingernails led to the arrest.

According to the charges, DNA typing would not have been able to be performed on the items seized from the crime scene -- a knife sheath, a bottle of Pepsi and a black comb.
