Erica Jones and Abe Jensen hope to set a world record, though the kids from Marshall aren't sure anyone keeps records on their kind of shell collecting.
The elementary school students have collected more than 550 cicada shells this summer.
It started when Abe's mother found a cicada shell. Erica says they thought that was cool, so they searched for more.
Erica and Abe have used any means necessary to get their shells down from trees in their neighborhood -- long yardsticks, ladders, even a big water gun. They say the bottoms are pretty sharp, so the trick is to pick them up from the back.
Abe is a third-grader at West Side Elementary and Erica is a second-grader at Park Side Elementary.
