An 11-year-old boy was critically injured in Shakopee Monday night after being hit by a pickup truck police believe was being driven by a drunken driver.
Nicholas James Hagadorn was riding his bike at a busy intersection at 17th Avenue and Marschall Road in heavy rain when the truck hit him around 8:30 p.m.
The pickup driver, 40-year old Randal Hennes of Prior Lake, is in custody. Police say the pickup truck has a large dent and a cracked windshield.
The child lives near the intersection so his parents rushed to the scene and were with him as he lay in the street. He wasn't breathing and he had a weak pulse, said police.
Other drivers stopped to help Nicholas but they say the driver who hit him sped away from the scene.
On Tuesday, people in the area were angry that the driver left a child, critically injured in the street.
"As a mom, you could put yourself in the shoes, I can't imagine. I cannot imagine. My heart goes out to the family," said parent Megan Horan-Hengel.
After hearing descriptions of the vehicle a Scott County deputy spotted the truck and arrested Hennes a short time later. He faces possible charges that include drunken driving and leaving the scene of an accident. Hennes has had two previous DWIs.
Police say Nicholas was not wearing a helmet and his parents had told him not to leave the house that night. He was airlifted to Hennepin County Medical Center where he's listed in critical condition.
A fund to help cover medical costs has been set up for Nicholas through Wells Fargo Bank. Donations can be made at any Wells Fargo Location in the Twin Cities to the Nick Hagadorn Fund.
