A Minneapolis mother has been charged with two felonies after allegedly turning the oven on with her son inside.
The 27-year-old mother's charges come down days after the boy's father was charged in the same incident.
William Tajahn Hurley's charges alleged he was the one who turned the oven on when the boy went inside to hide. The new charges state Debra Denise Chatman admitted to authorities it was actually she who turned the oven on with her son inside.
According to the charges, Chatman began "punishing" the child by striking him with a belt. Hurley, the boy's father, then allegedly continued to beat him and strike him with a hot iron.
According to Hurley's criminal complaint, which was filed last week, the boy was so scared that he hid under a bed and his father allegedly threatened to kill him if he didn't come out.
The boy told officers who responded to the scene that he ran from the apartment screaming, but was dragged back inside by his mother, at which point he was beaten again by Hurley. The boy said this time his father used an extension cord.
It was then that he tried to climb into the oven, according to the Hennepin County Attorney's Office. Chatman is alleged to have turned on the stove because her son had grabbed something inside.
According to the charges, Hurley threatened to beat his son again in full view of responding officers, who were forced to restrain him.
Chatman has been charged with two counts of malicious punishment of a child. Hurley has been charged with the same two counts.
