A Prior Lake, Minn. man has been charged in a hit-and-run that left an 11-year-old boy critically injured in Shakopee, Minn.
According to the criminal complaint, Randal Hennes, 40, hit Nicholas Hagadorn in his pickup truck Monday evening while the boy was riding his bicycle at the busy intersection of 17th Avenue and Marschall Road.
On Wednesday, Hennes was charged with three felony counts: criminal vehicular injury, failure to stop for an accident involving another person, and third-degree driving while under the influence of alcohol.
Rain was heavy at the time of the incident, and the light at the intersection for Hennes was green, but other drivers who observed said Hennes didn't even apply the brakes until after he hit Hagadorn.
After hearing descriptions of the vehicle a Scott County deputy spotted the truck and arrested Hennes a short time later. He asked the deputy, "Is the kid all right?"
The deputy noted the smell of alcohol. Hennes told the deputy he had only had one drink, but that it may have been a strong one. He failed a breath test.
Hennes has had two previous DWIs.
Police say Nicholas was not wearing a helmet. He was airlifted to Hennepin County Medical Center where he was still listed in critical condition as of Wednesday morning.
