Good To Know: Remembering Pohlad As War Hero

(WCCO) As you know, Minnesota Twins owner Carl Pohlad passed away on Monday at the age of 93. Don Shelby said Mr. Pohlad proved his mettle long before he came to Minnesota.

An obituary usually doesn't include the fact that he listened well to his wife. Because he did listen to Eloise, who knew twice as much about baseball as he did, we won two World Series.

He wasn't a baseball man first, football was his sport. He exasperated old Twins baseball hands by always using football analogies. He was a standout football player at Gonzaga and a boxer -- I don't know which gave him his characteristic broken nose.

I do know he fought in World War II, and in Germany and Austria. I know he was wounded and presented a Purple Heart. He was given a bronze star for bravery.

Minnesota will remember him as a philanthropist and sports businessman, among other things. I'll remember him for those three years in Europe in World War II.
