Not Driving That SUV? Get An Insurance Discount

(WCCO) If you drove up north this weekend and you took your car instead of your SUV, then you are part of a growing trend.

The value of SUVs has decreased so sharply, many owners say it's not worth it to sell them. So if your gas guzzler is parked, call your insurance agent for a discount.

Riding a Harley is Craig Whetston's way to save at the pump. He's driving his Chevy Tahoe less and less. It's not hard to see why, when he spends $20 to fill the former and in the ballpark of $100 to fill the latter.

"You notice that," said Whetston.

He might save on insurance too. If his Tahoe logs less than 75,000 miles each year, it would drop to the "pleasure driving" category instead of the "commuting" category.

Insurance companies such as State Farm reduce rates from 10 to 18 percent for lower mileage, a deal Whetston didn't know about.

"I don't think insurance companies want to tell you about discounts. I was not aware," he said.

Chad Swenson will be calling his insurance agent after we told him about the discount. He recently started driving his Saturn from his home in Elk River to his workplace in Forest Lake.

"Our Expedition sits in the garage. This is less on gas so we run it though it's an older car," said Swenson.

Another tip drivers may also wish to consider: suspending your insurance for several months at a time. If you want to keep your SUV for the snowy winter months, stop the insurance for six fair-weather months.

Another example: with Progressive Insurance, drivers can get a 25 percent discount if they install a device in their vehicle that monitors actual mileage. Progressive started that program as a test here in Minnesota and is now expanding it to more states.
