Charges have been dropped against a Minneapolis activist who set up a camp for poor people in a park on the weekend before the Republican National Convention.
The St. Paul city attorney's office dropped misdemeanor charges against 46-year-old Cheri Honkala.
City Attorney John Choi said the prosecutor in the case used her discretion. Choi said Honkala had spent a night in jail, and that his office feels that was the appropriate sanction.
Honkala's attorney, Ted Dooley, said the charges were baseless. He said people sleep in the park every night, but when they did it as a group, they got arrested.
Honkala and another activist set up an illegal encampment Aug. 28 at Harriet Island Regional Park so poor and homeless protesters could have a place to sleep during the Sept. 1-4 convention.
The two were arrested and charged with trespassing and other misdemeanors.
