1 Dead In Bus, Car Crash By Minn.-S.D. Border
MADISON, S.D. (AP) ―
One person was killed and several others seriously injured when a commercial bus and a car collided on Highway 34 east of Madison this morning.
Killed was the driver of the car, identified as 24-year-old Lance Parliament of Sioux Falls.
Two hospitals in Sioux Falls report they are treating 16 people hurt in today's car-bus crash near Madison.
At least two are in critical condition and five are reported in serious condition.
A spokesman for Avera McKennan Hospital says two more patients may be transferred from Madison to Sioux Falls.
All were on a bus that was carrying 55 passengers on a daytrip to a Flandreau casino.
The state Department of Public Safety says 51 people were taken to a hospital for treatment, observation or hospitalization.
The trip began in Mitchell Wednesday morning. Other passengers boarded at Artesian, Fedora, Howard, Madison and at the junction of Highways 34 and 37.
Patrol Lieutentant Alan Welch says the most seriously injured -- about a half dozen -- were airlifted to Sioux Falls hospitals. Others requiring hospital treatment were taken to a Madison hospital.
Investigators say the west-bound car drifted into the other lane and hit the side of the oncoming bus near the front. The bus went into the ditch and tipped on its side as it came to a stop.
Lake County Sheriff Roger Hartman said some of the passengers were out and walking around when he got there.
