A Brooklyn Center man accused of illegally taking his two children to Mexico pleaded guilty Thursday.
Juan Manuel Garcia-Trujillo, 36, faces a maximum of three years in prison when he is sentenced for one count of international parental kidnapping.
According to the plea agreement, he admitted to knowingly removing both his children, ages 2 and 8, from the United States on May 15, 2008 with the intent to obstruct the parental rights of the children's mother.
Claude Arnold, special agent in charge of the ICE Office of Investigations in Bloomington, said that the guilty plea is the first of its kind in Minnesota but, "should serve as a notice that international parental kidnapping is a criminal act that will not be tolerated."
In 2007, Garcia-Trujillo was also convicted of second-degree sexual assault and was later deported to Mexico for being in the United States illegally.
According to authorities, he returned to the United States to take the children. Both children were returned to their mother when he was arrested in LaBarca, Mexico.
