Pawlenty, Lawmakers Go Bowling

St. Paul (AP) ― Some of the high rollers on Minnesota's political scene took to the bowling alley Thursday in an effort to forge a better working relationship.

Gov. Tim Pawlenty hosted 28 lawmakers from both parties, including all four caucus leaders, at an underground bowling alley that's been a popular St. Paul hangout for 79 years.

The afternoon retreat was part of a continuing effort by leaders of Minnesota's divided government to bury years of Capitol acrimony.

"It's hard to be jerks to each other if you hang out a little bit," Pawlenty said before he and the other lawmakers spread out over eight lanes. Each paid $12 to cover the cost of their shoes, their games and some pizza.

Senate Majority Leader Larry Pogemiller, DFL-Minneapolis, said he's all for the socializing if it helps build a healthier political climate.

"The governor is reaching out and trying to create an atmosphere where we can get things done," Pogemiller said. "And I hear he's a pretty good bowler."
