Condolences To Bob Rainey's Family
(WCCO)
Statement from Bob Rainey's family:
It is a time like this when we are reminded of the kindness of others. It is so heartwarming to know that you thought so highly of our son and brother. We can't possibly thank you enough for the gift you've provided with your words. We've always known how special Bobby was, it means the world to see he meant the same to all of you.
To the doctors and nurses who cared for Bobby, thank you. You provided the comfort he needed and the care he deserved. To all of the sports professionals who took time out of their busy schedules to visit, thank you. To the WCCO family, thank you for respecting Bobby and still showing how much you care. Words don't seem to describe how much you made us all feel part of your family. To all of Bobby's friends, we hope you know how very much he appreciated every visit, every encouraging word, every hug.
Bobby always wanted to live in Minnesota. Having spent time here the past few years, we see exactly why -- the kind, caring people. You will all have a special place in our hearts. Thank you!

My family would like to extend our condolences to Bob's family and friends. We have had the honor of knowing Bob for a number of years now, and I don't think you could find a nicer, friendlier person. We will miss him greatly and appreciate all he did for us and the UofL girls basketball team.

I had the pleasure of working with Bob for about six years at NewsChannel 5 in Nashville. He was always a gentleman and very pleasant to be around. Quiet sometimes, but I appreciated the conversations we did have. I was very saddened to hear of his passing. He really made an impression on my life.

Bob Rainey is loved and missed. He was my first intern in Rochester, NY at WOKR-TV. He was my first sports reporter at WLKY-TV in Louisville, KY where I still work. Selfishly I am so sad he is gone. But I know he is in a better place, pain free. And I know I will see him again in Heaven.

I had the pleasure of spending Labor Day weekend last year with Bob and Todd Wilson's family cabin. He was a kind and gentle and thoughtful man. He engaged with my kids in an interested and mature way, not treating them as kids, but as someone interesting to talk to. I saw him again this spring at Todd's childs birthday. And thought it was no nice of him (and his mother) to come and visit and show their interest in Jalen and family.
The world will miss his thoughtful gentle spirit, and I was glad to have known him, if only brielfy. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time.

I'm so very sorry to hear of Bob's death. I watched him losing weight, and wondered what was going on
I lost my husband 4 years ago to cancer, he was 47. It shows no mercy, just takes what it needs. I'm now very active in the Relay For Life, trying to do what I can to find a cure for this awful disease.
Once again, I'm sorry for your loss. My prayers are with you.

It is with sadness and surprise that I have learned of Bob Rainey's death.
Last January I sent Bob an email expressing my concern for his health.
I told him that if he had planned to lose weight, that was one thing, but if he was ill I wanted him to know that I had been praying for him for a while,
asking the Lord to be with him and heal him if he was dealing with illness.
I told him I would keep on praying for his well-being no matter what.
He wrote me back an email on January 27, 2008 and thanked me for caring about him and especially for praying for him. He assured me that he had thought for some time that he should lose some weight and now he had. He thought my kindness was an example of the good people of Minnesota. Once again he thanked me for my prayers and said "God bless you."
We have lost a good TV sportsperson and a wonderful man. My prayers go out to his family and friends.
(I frantically looked through my emails to find our correspondence. To my heartbreak, by some technological gremlin, it has been deleted, all but the heading that says From Rainey, Bob To Karen and Forrie. It was precious. How could that have happened?!). Sadness.

Wow where to begin! How do you describe such a man of honor, integrity, and diligence. I met Bob when I was in my late teens here in Louisville KY. I am now 34 years old and have many regrets of not staying in contact throughout the years as we both went separate ways in our lives. Bob always new how to make a cloudy day sunny and a rainy day fun. He was very quite, gentle, loving, and carefree. My mother and I had the awesome opportunity to be friends with Bob as he was working at fox 41. He would always grab his earpiece on air if he knew we were watching, it was kind of our own private cue on air.
As the years went by Bob used to take me to dinner pretty frequently , he always told me how much he loved to see me eat. I remember telling Bob don't order so much I cant eat it all and he would always say eat what you can and take the rest home. As we enjoyed many dinners of course our conversation was revolved around sports and both of our love for sports. Bob left many happy memories for me as Bob and I were in Vegas together when Tiger won his first Masters..If you could only have seen the glow at that moment on his face when he won. We both had small tears of joy for Tiger. Also Bob and I shared memories in Philly as he flew me out and showed me the town. We tried to see who could run the stairs the fastest as if we were in the movie Rocky. Hahaha. Bob was the first person to show me other parts of the world and always believed in me to become a mighty woman. Bob was always very honest and real and would speak his mind to you. I just hope as he looks down now as my new guardian angel he is proud of me. Bob had the biggest heart and love for the people and the things in his life. I remember times in Louisville he would be working so hard and all he would say was he wanted to make his mom and sister happy. Knowing Bob I'm sure and know he has made everyone he has come in contact with very proud of him. I believe that is all he ever wanted!! Bob has always been private never flashy but has a sense a humor you wouldn't believe unless you saw it. He was great at singing songs and remembering all the words and his interpretations of Elvis and many others that would totally make you laugh. Bob always was Bob and I remember hearing he was in Minneapolis with his purple men that was all he talked about in Louisville was wanting to work there so he could cover his purple men. I on the other hand have always been an Alex Rodriquez fan, so good oh Bob at the all star game several years ago when A-rod was with the Mariners Bob had A Rod autograph some items for me and sent them to me.. He was always thinking of ways to make others happy. I along with many others new nothing of Bobs Health I respect his wishing but only have regrets he wouldn't have been so private. We never got to say our goodbyes. So as these last few days have been very hard for me Bob is also going to be my new strength. We don't know why things happen especially to people as great as Bob Rainey, but we all need to remember life is short to fuss and fight or not stay in touch with the ones we love and care for or people who have been great inspirations like Bob Rainey has been in my life. I think Bob would tell us all to live life to the fullest, laugh as much as we can, and love the people who love you and you love.
To Bobs family, my heart goes out to you my prayers are with you and I pray that God will give us all the strength we need in this time and fill us all with the peace of love from Bob.
My Dear friend Bob call all the play by plays you want, you now have the best chair in the house . You truly are in heaven as you can see every event now at all times, watch every game, race, golf tournament, every thing from the master chair. Make all the calls! Wow how blessed you are because now you are the master satellite and can view them all at the same time. You can send all the signals out now so I guess you just have a new job in heaven you will be the master Broadcaster. Not only that but as we (the players) in this world are still in the game, help us , direct us, and call us play by play to be our best and to shine like the star that you are...!!!!!!!!!!!!
You will truly be missed and we love you.... from Mal and Mal jr Mary Ann Lewis @Melissa Ann (lewis) Jones

I am so sad that the world has lost Bob Rainey. I was an instant fan from the first time I saw him on WCCO. He was such a classy addition to the CCO family. His warmth and enthusiasm for what he was doing came right through into our living rooms. I don't think he had an arrogant bone in his body. He was by far my favorite sportscaster and I looked forward to seeing him on the air. He was the best! My thoughts and prayers are with the Rainey family and the WCCO family that he was an integral part of. What a loss.

I worked with Bob at News Channel 5 in Nashville right after I graduated from college in 2002. He and I immediately became friends because we shared a Xavier bond. Bob was funny, talented and a great friend. He was always there to bounce ideas around, whether it was before I landed my first job in Sports at WSIL-TV 3 in Carbondale or making the move to Sports Director at WTVW in Evansville. It's a sad day for our profession. I will truly miss Bob. My thoughts, prayers and deepest sympathies go out to his mother, his sister and the entire Rainey family.

Rainey family and WCCO,
I am sad to hear of your loss. Bob was always a great guy to sit down and talk with. Always very personable.
Working at KEYC, the CBS affiliate in Mankato, for 5 1/2 years it was sometimes intimidating to see the Twin Cities' stations show up for Vikings training camp, even though I knew a couple of people from 'CCO, but when Bob was added to the mix I remember never having a problem talking with him on his first trip to MSU. The same goes for traveling to the Metrodome to cover the Vikes, because that gave me some time to talk with Bob as well in the auxiliary press box. He just loved to talk about the Purple, and his love for the team was contagious.
I love to golf and wish I could have got a round in with Bob. The closest I think we came was playing the same media day at Hazeltine in preparation for the U.S. Men's Amateur.
I will miss seeing him and his energetic attitude at all of those events in the future.
My condolences,

Please know that Bob has many friends in Kentucky. I worked with Bob at WDRB-TV (Fox) about 15 years ago. He was a happy and dedicated sportscaster. His smile was contagious and he became an encyclopedia about the Kentucky Derby. Everyone who worked with Bob liked him. I never heard him say a bad word about anyone. I am sorry for your loss.

Well miss Bob, he was a great sportscaster and wonderful human being. We didnt know him personally ,unfortunately, but could tell he was a good decent human being. As a woman, I didnt watch sports, but still enjoyed Bob's sportscasts because he was so personable and professional. My boyfriend enjoyed his sportscasts too. He should have been on prime time sports.
Our sincere sympathy and condolences go out to your family.
We'll miss him too. Our prayers are with you.

Dear Rainey family,
I am sorry for your loss, i knew Mr. Rainey was sick as my husband has been fighting parkingsons for over 20 years and cancer for 6 years. My beloved and i knew Mr. Rainey was sick and we both thought how brave he was to keep trying to work and go on as though nothing was wrong.
Mr. Rainey was truly loved in Minnesota by all people of all colors, he was a kind and gentle man anyone could tell that just by his manner, we have lost a great gentleman and you have lost a great and wonderful son , brother.
Our prayers and thoughts are with you and yours.

I was shocked to hear the news of Bob's passing. I worked with Bob during his time at WDRB FOX 41 in Louisville. He was a person I worked with, struggled with, and also laughed at and with. I know it was his dream to cover the Vikings. I am so pleased that he realized his dream; many of us never get that chance. I am sure that he will be missed by not only his co-workers in Minneapolis, but those of us who worked with him in the past. Sports coverage in the afterlife just got a bit better. Bob you will be missed. Thanks for everything.

To Bob's family and friends,
It's been many years since I saw Bob, from our days at Fox 41 TV in Louisville, but I have many fond memories. Bob, our co-worker Bill Francis and I anchored the weekend news. It was always a little hard to work weekends when everyone else was off with family and friends, but the news and sports and production crews all became our "family." Bob helped make it fun to work those weekend shifts. I hadn't realized he'd ended up in such a great gig in a great city... I am so happy he spent those 4 years at WCCO. My sister in law in Mound, MN knew Bob well (from TV!). He was a fine man and a good friend.
My husband, as the retired coach of the Louisville Cardinals, knew Bob well. How many pre-game, post-game, gearing up for the big U of L - UK rivalry, etc, press conferences did Bob cover? Denny was stunned to hear this news.
Our prayers are with you, his family and friends. Having lost my own father to liver cancer that had started several years earlier in his colon, I can appreciate your pain. Please know we are thinking of you all.
God Bless,
Susan Sweeney Crum and Denny Crum

To the Rainey Family: Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Bob will always be a part of your hearts and memories and to know that he was loved and respected by everyone in Minnesota should bring some comfort. Know that he enjoyed what he did and it showed to others and that he was a gracious, kind man.

Dear Rainey Family and Friends,
First of all, I want to send my deepest sympathies for the loss of Bob. It was always a pleasure to see Bob's face. I could tell that he loved his job, he always had a smile on his face. Even though I never got to meet him in person, I felt like I knew him all my life, he never tried to be the best there was. He was a very down to earth person. I would always WCCO on the weekends to see Bob give all the scores and of course his ply-by-plays. Bob will be greatly missed. Sorry about the loss of a great person.

As the 'receptionist' at WCCO when Bob joined our news team, we quickly became friends and I knew he was a perfect fit for the WCCO family. There was never a day that he didn't walk through the door with a smile on his face, even if it was hidden behind layers of winter clothing! I would always joke with him about the cold Minnesota winters, when he would come blowing through the door with his hat and scarf on and only his eyes peeking out. I told him that it must be "true love" for him to give up those mild Tennessee winters
and of course I was referring to his love of the Vikings.
He always stopped to chat about sports and we talked a lot about growing up as long-distance Vikings fans. I am from WI, which is not so far away, but it IS the land of beer, cheese and Brett Favre. Bob enjoyed my stories about the hassle I endured from all of the Packers fans and I enjoyed his knowledge and passion for the game. It was endearing to hear the excitement in his voice when he talked about the Vikings and his excitement to be in the Twin Cities. Bob's excitement was contagious and I think that his presence gave all of us a renewed energy and excitement for the work we were doing.
On Christmas Eve 2004 the Vikings and Packers played at the Dome. I told Bob that I would give anything to be at that game (there's no better rivalry!) and asked that he cheer extra loudly for me so we were sure the Vikings would beat the pants off those Cheeseheads! When we were back to work the next week, he told me that he yelled as loud as he could but it wasn't quite enough; the Vikings lost. But to 'make up for it' he brought me a purple Santa hat with the Vikings logo on the front which they had given out at the game.
That was Bob
thoughtful, kind, charming, genuine. He was always a bright spot in my day with his warm smile and positive attitude and he touched the lives of everyone around him with just the simplest gestures. I find great comfort in knowing that Bob will always be there cheering on the Vikings with me and now has eternal season tickets and the best seat in the sky!
God bless you and keep you, Bob. You will be missed dearly.

Rainey Family:
Our deepest and most sincere sympathies in the lost of your son and brother.
We made the switch to WCCO news from another local station, at about the time Bob joined WCCO.
He always seemed like he was speaking directly to us and only us. He was a such a great sports announcer.
He touched every one who watched the sports reports as well as any Viking fan. You have so much to be proud of.
Your lost will be felt by all of us in the Twin Cities.
God Speed Bob.

To the Rainey Family and Friends,
I am very saddened to learn of the passing of Bob. I was an intern at NewsChannel 5 in Nashville a few years ago. I like any other sports intern was looking to learn everything I could about sports and broadcasting. Most sportscasters are too busy to teach interns and most really just think interns are a waste of time but Bob took the time to get to know me and teach me about sports and broadcasting. He took me too meet my idol "Bo Jackson" and he took me to "Neyland Stadium" for my first game ever from the sidelines. He was my mentor and my friend long after he left NewsChannel 5. We will never have another like Bob Rainey. He really cared about helping people and he really cared about teaching others. I will never forget the lessons that Bob has taught me and I hope to pass along the same values and principles that I learned from him. I will miss my friend and now my new passion is helping educate others of the disease that I never knew he suffered from. I am sincerely sorry for our loss. My thoughts and prayer are with you.
Sincerely,

My Soul felt Condolences
When I first started off my career in television at WLKY in Louisville, Kentucky Bob Rainey was doing weekend sports
As a matter of fact my first name is Bobby
When I introduced myself to Bob
I said " Bob Rainey
Bob Rainey." We laughed and laughed and from that moment on we hit-it-off. We would answer each others pages from the intercom.
I sit here now with tears rolling down my face remembering a great guy.
My heart felt condolences to his family and everyone at WCCO
Bob was a great guy
A tremendous Person with a heart of gold
I have and will always remember him

I would just like to say that Bob got me started on my path in the world of journalism. I was a sports intern at WCCO in the spring of 2006.
I took little away from the internship, because really, larger stations don't let interns do a whole lot. But one of the things I will always remember: Bob's attitude toward work, and even one up, how Bob treated me.
As a "bigtime" anchor/reporter, Bob did not have to show me the graciousness, respect, and insight that he did. He believed in me and even sent a letter to the station I now work at in Rochester, MN. I simply recall Bob as a regal man who commanded the room with his quiet but impeccably genuine presence.
My condolences to your family:
Sincerely,
Chris Hrapsky

I worked with Bob at WLKY many years ago. He was always a special person and a true professional at his trade. Bob and I worked together when he was covering the Kentucky Derby and was always very passionate about the sports. I will say a prayer for him.

Bob was a co-worker of mine in Nashville. Our offices for the entertainment magazine show I produce are right beside the sports department ... so we spend a lot of time seeing and hearing all of the goings on each day. I echo what so many friends and colleagues have already said... there was never a single day that I saw Bob NOT excited to be working on his assignment with his eyes wide and an attitude of "let's go!" Deadline or not, I never - ever - saw him in a foul mood. He just did not operate that way. Until now, I just have not stopped to think about that before - but I do not think there is a single other person I've worked with, past or present, I can say that about. Bob was indeed one of a kind! I know his family is so proud of their son and brother - the sportscaster! I was honored to see such a brief but amazingly genuine example of grace and kindness to others. My prayers are with everyone during this time of immense loss.

Dear Rainey family,
I used to sit next to Bob in the press box during Vikings home games (the 2004 and 2005 seasons) when I worked for a station in Austin, Minnesota. He was always very amiable and shared his insights about the business, which I appreciated a lot. I am a Minneapolis native, and was so glad to see an African-American sports anchor in the Twin Cities. I believe has broken ground for others who aspire to work in the field. I heard that Bob had been off the air for a long time, but didn't know what he was facing. I kept him in my thoughts and prayers. And, am saddened for your loss. I had dreamed of working with Bob someday...and that two African-American males would work together in sports at the same station (or in the same market). I know he has made a difference to many and is an inspiration to all who know him. He was a blessing...and lived out his dream of covering his favorite team (Vikings) and residing in the area that he had grown to love (Twins Cities). My heart goes out to your family. God bless!

i fell in love with bob rainey the first time i saw him on the channel 4 news. this is a sad day for sports fans. i had no idea he was sick and only wish i could have told him how much i appreciated him when he was here. i'm happy he had the rest of the team at 'cco to let him know how special he was. he sure seems to have been well loved by his co-workers.
my deepest sympathies go out to his family and friends. he was much too young to leave us but i assume they must have needed his smiley face, gentle demeanor and savvy reporting where he is now . he will be greatly missed by this fan.

To those he touched through television, and those he touched personally, Bob was a pure soul.
For three years, Bob and I shared a beat as sports reporters at competing stations in Nashville, but we didn't share competition as much as we shared friendship.
How could you not like Bob? He was genuine, with a calming presence; he knew there was more to life than getting a story on the 10:00pm newscasts.
I can only hope his calming presence provides some comfort to his family at this time.
My prayers are with you.

To the Rainey Family,
I wish to extend my condolences to your family. I did not know Bob personally but watching him do the sports on WCCO was always entertaining. He brought you all the updates and scores that you needed with a little humor and a lot of class. When we heard about it on the news for the first time, it made my wife and I tear up seeing how much he was loved at WCCO. This is one reason why we always watch WCCO, they are like family and truly love what they do. And they seem to really care about each other.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Although WCCO wasn't my news channel of choice, I occasionally caught the Channel 4 news and saw the handsome, charming and personable sportscaster, Bob Rainey. I noticed when he had lost a lot of weight and had no idea he was sick. I was truly saddened to hear that he had passed away. I lost my brother earlier this Spring at a young age and my heart goes out to the Rainey family. Please know how much all of us in Minnesota enjoyed watching Bob.

I emailed BOB last year when me and my wife notice he lost a lot of weight, he responded to yes he has lost a lot of weight and he was working on a personal issue , he then told me his nick name used to be BULKY BOB, :) , then about 7-8 months ago me and my wife saw him at the Huberty Humphery Cancer Center in Robbinsdale , my wife was being treated for cancer there as well, she passed away last January , so I know how BOB's Family feels, I wish them all the love in the world, BOB's gonna be missed, he was my favorite sports caster, you can tell he really loved sports, best wishes from Clifford in Brooklyn Park.

I am so sorry for your loss. I met Bob four years ago when he started playing in the Greg Coleman Celebrity Golf Tournament. He was always so upbeat and generous with his time. Dear Rainey Family:
I'm sure I share the sentiments of thousands of WCCO viewers--I wish I would have known that Bob Rainey had cancer. The last time he was on the air, I said to my kids that he didn't look well. I started praying for him from that time on even not knowing the ailment. I wish I would have known this while he was still alive so I could have sent him a card or an e-mail. Bob was loved and his presence and passion for sports made a difference, no matter how long he has been there. I know Bob wanted to remain in the background, like Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh who would say, "Thanks for noticing me". Yes, we noticed you, Bob, and your absence will be sorely missed. May the Lord be with your family. I wish this horrible disease will be wiped out. It has robbed us of so many special people.

I met Bob a couple times on Nicollett Mall, he was always so friendly, and once I remember walking by the studio he was at his desk and I waved and he waved back and smiled, I watched him on the news and was so worried but no one would say anything. I was so shocked when I saw it on the news Saturday night, I think I have watched more news these last 2 days just to get as much info as I can, he will be missed, but now is in a much better place with no pain or suffering and will now be the family angel.
God Bless

Bob Rainey was a man who I will rememeber for his passion, dedication, love of sports and above all, his genuine nature. I, along with my wife and 2 sons, ages 16 & 21, were devastated by the news of his passing but were also fortunate to have known Bob through WCCO-TV. I didn't know Bob personally, but did pass him on the Metrodome steps while down for a baseball coaching clinic a few years ago. I'll never forget that he said hello with a huge smile to all 4 of us as we passed him on the stairs.
No, I didn't know Bob Rainey but would have been proud to call him my friend. God Bless you, Bob and the Rainey family.

He touch many lives with his kindness, laughter and just his outlook on life. Bob and I had many good times together like only best friends (brothers) can. Him and his mom would come over to my mom's house every Christmas eve (while he lived in Rochester) and from the moment they walked in the door the mood changed to total joy and happiness. Bob could make anyone smile at anytime no matter what the situation. My mom has been battling an illness for a few years and every time he would visit Rochester he would make it a point to go see her .No matter how down my mom was the moment Bob walked in, my moms eyes lit up and it was almost as if her problems were gone for that moment he was there.
Bob and I were both sports nuts and would always sit on the couch watching anything to do with sports and we would quiz each other on sports all day long. His one wish he made to me a few weeks ago never came true. He wanted to make it back to Rochester and sit with me and my 13 year old daughter(another sports nut) and watch sports all day on a Sunday. He loved my kids like they were his nieces and loved that Nicole and I had that bond to sit and watch sports, it was something Bob always said he wished he could have had. Well Bob even though you didn't make it back to Rochester, Nicole and I will be watching sports with you every Sunday from here on out.
My thoughts and prayers are with the wonderful family and friends of Bob Rainey

I grew up in Louisville and some of my family still lives there, including my mom. She's a tough sell but she told me on more than one occasion that Bob was her favorite sportscaster. For someone who would rather turn the TV off than watch someone she didn't like, those were strong words, indeed.
I spent 22 years in local TV sports, in Lexington, so I knew Bob. I told him that story, so he would ALWAYS ask how my mom was doing. He was a classy, talented guy and he'll be missed. My deepest condolences.

To: Bob Rainey Family
I was shocked and sadden to hear about Bob Saturday. While he was here in Nashville, Bob was a very pleasant person to be around. He also was very committed to covering sports in the Nashville/Middle Tennessee area. It was not a job to Bob, but it was a passion. He did it very well.
Best wishes to your family. Bob will be missed. Remember him in your hearts so that he will never be far away from you.

I loved watching and listening to Bob. He had a special "something" that drew me right to him. I am very shocked because I didn't realize he was so ill. My heart goes out to his family during this time of loss. Thanks for sharing your treasured Bob with all of us, he will be dearly missed.
Take care. I will pray for you.

My name is John Boruk, and I wanted to offer those who were close to Bob my sincerest thoughts and condolences. Bob worked at the CBS station in Nashville at a time when I was at the ABC. As you all know, there was no one more friendlier than Bob. We hung out at his townhome on occasion and played several rounds of golf together. The only thing that frustrated me was how many practice swings he took before he actually hit the ball. Playing golf with Bob certainly forced me to be patient. His engaging personality made you want to open up and share intimate details of your life. He was that easy to talk to and I certainly regret not keeping in touch with him once I left in 2003. I was happy for him to see him move to Minnesota and I truly feel like he lived a very fulfilling life, doing what he enjoyed and what made him happy in life. I watched your coverage on your website, and I believe Bob would have been deeply touched to know that his co-workers thought that highly of him and that he actually made a difference in someone's life and a community, where in this business, we can certainly isolate ourselves from friends and family. It appears you were all friends and family to him. Great job!

To the Rainey family,
Bob was a very special person. A couple years ago my son was volunteering at the Epiphany State Fair diner and Bob came in for lunch. My son recognized him and asked for his autograph. Bob was very gracious and kind to my son. My son remembers that day fondly. Bless your family during this difficult time, the world has lost a wonderful human being but heaven has gained a great man.

Dear Rainey family,
I was so sorry and shocked to hear of Bob's passing. I had the pleasure of working with him at WTVF-TV in Nashville, TN. He loved his sports, and was always so professional...always the gentleman. You must all be so proud of him. It's a loss for the profession, and for those who knew Bob personally.

To the Family of Bob Rainey,
You have our heartfelt sympathy on the loss of your son and brother. We heard nothing but wonderful things about your son, especially during his battle with colon cancer. Another stage 4 colon cancer survivor who got to know Bob as chemo buddies, relayed stories of Bob's up and downs over these past 18 months, and we sincerely hoped both men would have stories of triumph to share. We are happy that we still have Don; we are saddened to lose Bob. That is the randomness of this cancer; we have good friends who were diagnosed at a late stage and our with us living full lives, and we know of too many lives - and young lives - cut short by this disease. We hope this will be a moment that many realize the motto our Coalition lives by:
Get Your Rear in Gear
! Colon cancer screening does save lives. Talk to your doctor, no matter what your age, about this important screening exam. Bob will live on through those he has touched, especially with those of us fighting colon cancer every day.

I have always enjoyed seeing Bob Rainey on the WCCO newscasts! His delivery and his wit have made the sports casts come alive. We can spend our days dwelling on the "why's" of why Bob had such a short life, or we can spend our time reflecting on the wonderful memories that this man brought into the living rooms of many people who relied on his knowledge of sports to inform them. To Bob's family, thank you for sharing him with us.

Bob was an enjoyable person to watch, because he was so INTO his stories. He will be greatly missed. God rest his soul and I hope he wraps his family in his loving arms and gives them all the trouble grace to endure Bob's passingmay God grant them peace, may Bob rest in peace.

I was saddened to hear the news of Bob's passing and ironically I found out thru the TWINS broadcast announcement by Dick Bremer. I personally felt Bob was about the only true hockey fan in the sports department @ 'CCO.
I never met him, but, he came across as a genuinely nice guy and class act. The Twin Cities has lost a great sports guy in Bob Rainey.

Dear family and friends of Mr. Rainey,
I'm extremely sad to hear about the passing of Bob. I, like just about every viewer, was completely blind-sided by the news that he was even sick. I noticed the weight loss and the absences, but I just didn't put it all together until, well, yesterday when I heard. I feel almost guilty that I didn't know all he was going through. But then I realize that that is exactly how Bob wanted it to be. He could have gone on air and told everyone about how sick he was and how much pain he must have been going through, but he didn't. He went on air with a huge smile on his face and reported sports, just like he wanted to do since he was a little kid. The fact that he was so humble that he didn't want people to worry about the fact that he was dying nearly brings me to tears
.So to the Rainey family, I have so much respect for you guys and for the son/sibling that you allowed all WCCO viewers to meet and become friends with, if only through the television screen. I hope I can grow up to be the kind of man he was. Caring, compassionate, kind, friendly, and most of all, Humble. I wish I could have met him. May God bless you all through this terrible loss.
Sincerely,

To the family and friends of Bob Rainey -
I love Minnesota sports and read and listen diligently to news articles about all our teams but most especially the Vikings. Bob Rainey impressed me with his smooth/cool style immediately and I always looked forward to his side stories. Those who cover sports in this community are not always kind but I found Bob to be fair and truthful and on one rare occasion I sent him an e-mail thanking him for his coverage of my favorite team. Imagine my surprise when this busy young man took the time to respond to my e-mail. He shared his story of his love of the Vikings and I immediately felt connected.
I have and will continue to miss his wonderful smile and kind eyes.
My most sincere condolences.

I met Bob one time at a Viking event. Even though I never got the opportunity to speak to him he hit me as great man with the love of the Vikings. When I first heard of his passing I was just shocked. I watch the sports every night or day as I can as, as I work evenings and he was just great to watch. As a fan of TV sports he was the best. I hope his passing tells all of us that no matter how great you are it does not matter when he calls your name. I had a scare with the same cancer and got the great news of being cancer free. My prays go you and the rest of his friends and family.

I was wondering where Bob had disappeared too and now I know. My heart is saddened by his passing. My prayers and thoughts are with his family. I always thought that his smile was contagious as I would find myself smiling when he was speaking of all the sports he loved. It is a sad day today, but I am sure he would want all of his fans to remember the happy rather than the sad. May God bless the Rainey family and help them through these difficult times.

To the Rainey family, I would like to offer my condolences on the passing of Bob Rainey. I'm a big sports fan and I was always drawn to Bob's style of sportscasting. He had a unique way of presenting the sports cast and drawing your attention to what he was talking about. He appeared to me to be a good man and I am sad that he suffered from cancer for so long. He put up a courageous battle. I am sad he passed away so young. He will be greatly missed and I will miss seeing him on WCCO on the weekends.

My sincere condolences to Bob Rainey's families; his mother and sister, and his WCCO family. All the qualities written about him are true; I can add nothing new there. He had charisma, truly loved and was knowledgeable about all types of sports, and delivered the sports with a style that made you want to hear all he had to say.
I, too, missed him, and wondered at his absence. It sounds like his desire to deal with his illness privately was just another quality of a person whose focus was on those around him, not himself. Yes, a gentle demeanor, great dresser, good sense of humor and obvious attention to detail in preparing for his on air time. I especially enjoyed his interaction with his on-air co-workers. First class, all the way!
His mom can be proud of the gentleman she raised; take comfort in knowing that he is now at peace with God, and I am certain, enjoying another round of golf.

To the family and friends of Bob Rainey and the WCCO News Team,
I was saddened when I came across the story of Bob Rainey's passing. I will always remember Bob's passion for sports and hearing the excitement in his voice whenever he spoke about sports. No matter the outcome of a Vikings or a Twins game he always had a smile on his face. Like a lot of other WCCO viewers I had no idea of his battle with colon cancer, even though he was a private person you could never tell by the way he was on TV. It so sad to see a vivid and wonderful man's life to be taken so early by cancer. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and his other family, the WCCO Crew.

My sincerest sympathy to the Rainey family. And also to his colleagues at WCCO.
My mother died from colon cancer as well many years ago. So though no one can heal the sorrows felt by the passing of Bob; my prayer is that Bob's passing will remind everyone the importance of colon checks. Bob loved life and lived it to the fullest obviously just as did my mother. I believe he would want good to come from his death and if that is to remind people to see their doctor for regular check ups
then Bob has yet done good in this world just as he did with his ever present smile while here on earth.
Bob was most enjoyable to watch while on WCCO and he will be missed.
My sympathy and prayers to all of his family and extended family.
Sincerely,

Bob and I, along with my wife, were friends through Bob's friend Susan in Nashville. Through that connection, Bob and I became pretty good friends during his time in the Music City. Bob and I had some fun times together without the girls and I even surprised him with a chance visit to the Twin Cities (It's a funny story I'll have to share sometime). Just before we moved to Baton Rouge, Bob had called me to tell me of his condition. I was shocked because it came right after he had visited and stayed with us in Nashville for a friend's wedding. Shortly thereafter was when he found out.
When he told me, there was a strength in his voice and a confidence that he was in control no matter what lay before him. We exchanged emails a few times and as recently as this past week, I tried to get in touch with him to see how things were going. If only I had known
Bob is at peace now and may God bless you and your family in this difficult time.
Even though we're far away, if there is anything Amy and I can do for you, please don't hesitate to ask.

From Nashville;
I have missed Bob being here in Nashville since he left 4 years ago. I wanted everyone in Minnesota to know that he was given a very nice tribute on the Sunday night news program where he worked for 7 years. He was loved and missed by our city so much that we still felt the impact so many years after he left us for you. You were very lucky to have him give you your sports news, as were we. We have had three people to come in since he went to MN, but none have filled his shoes. And that's OK. He set the bar very high. We should all be so lucky to be half the person he was.

To the Family of Bob Rainey:
They say that you can tell what a person is like by looking into their eyes.
Well, you looked in Bob's eyes and you saw:
Respect, for himself and others, and his profession
Interest in what was being said, shared communication
Caring about what he was talking about
and plain old Love,
Love of Life, People, Places,Topics, anything and you could tell he Loved it
That alone shows what a class act he was and he will be remembered by that
My thoughts and prayers to his "Families", He will always be remembered

Mind you i have been at this gym for about 1.5 yrs and nobody ever spoke to me until him. THAT WAS LOVE from a fellow man. As small as that was? I appreciated that, and he became my gym friend until i moved. THANK YOU. MAY YOU REST IN PEACE FRIEND.

We are so saddened to hear of Bob's passing. We loved watching him and listening, he was also so enthusiastic. On one hand it seems terrible that he had just begun to live his dream of being in MN and it was taken away so quickly. On the other hand though, at least he got to live his dream before he left. Not everyone gets to do that. We have missed seeing him and feel incredibly sad that he is gone. Our hearts go out to you and our thoughts and prayers are with you.

It was with shock and sadness that I read of Mr. Rainey's death in the Sunday newspaper. I felt my heart get increasingly heavy with every word I read. I will miss watching his sports casts, not so much for his polish or professionalism, both qualities he possessed in abundance. Instead, I'll miss him for the decency and kindness that he projected.
There's a belief in my faith that when a person passes, he or she can hear the footsteps from the grave of those attending their funeral. I have no doubt that the sound Mr. Rainey hears will be deafening from the footsteps of the many mourners he touched in such a short time.
May you find peace in the fact that Mr. Rainey touched so many so positively.
Sincerely,
Khalid Elmasry

To Bobby's viewers, friends and family,
Bobby and I went to grammar school, middle school and high school together in Rochester, NY. Our passion for sports started at an early age. We were both HUGE Minnesota Vikings fans. During the fall and winter that is all we would talk about. However, during other sports seasons we were typically giving each other "the business". He liked the Dodgers, and I the Reds. He liked the Celtics, and I the Lakers. He even liked the Blackhawk's, and I liked the Bruins. We would play endless games of basketball, wiffle-ball, and football, all summer long never stopping to eat. We would only stop to swim (swimming was the only thing Bobby was not the best in). During the winter we would play a board game called Strat-O-matic baseball. Bob would be the announcer on a old "real to real" tape recorder calling the die results of the game. I can still hear him say: "Here the pitch to Garvey
.there's a drive, It's way back, way back, goodbye Mr. Spalding!!." Then he run around the basement to just to rub it in.
Football was our favorite sport. When ever we played football together (make believe or real) he had to be Chuck Foreman. When we got to high school he wore the number "44". I was a lineman so I couldn't argue with him. I wore number "73" my freshman year (Ron Yary).
As you can tell we had huge imaginations as kids. Back then you couldn't buy Jerseys or play video games all you had was your imagination.
After we were in high school reality said we weren't going to be professional stars. Although Bobby was a 3 sport star he re-directed his dream to become a sportscaster. Maybe, it was the "real to real" play by play calls in the basement or maybe it was his way to stay close to the sports we both loved.
After college we lost touch for a while until I had a 4 month assignment in Nashville. Bobby was the weekend anchor in Nashville and I was able to spend some real quality time with him. He introduced me to all his friends at the station and we were able to see a Titans and a Panthers game together.
When he got the opportunity to move to Minnesota he was on cloud nine. He would be able to meet his childhood hero's Alan Page, Fran Tarkenton, John Gilliam, Carl Eller and even Chuck Foreman among many others. Being the professional that he was he probably never let them know his true admiration for them. I can tell he LOVED the Vikings.
We kept in touch during each year making time to play golf with high school friends and re-living the old times. He had a chance to meet my wife and daughter and for that I am grateful.
Over the past 18 months we would talk every couple of months. He approached his illness with a "can do" attitude. The same one I saw during our "OLD" high school football days. His mother spent a lot of time with him in Minnesota during the radiation treatments and through the difficult times. The biggest hero in his life has been his mother. That I have seen for myself over the years (she is mine as well).
Over the past year I was planning a trip to Minnesota to visit with Bobby. Unfortunately, between work and family there never seemed to be a good time (this I will always regret).
Over the past 5 months we traded voicemails but never connected. In his last message he said what he always said. "I am fighting this as hard as I can. I have good days and I have bad days". It was approaching our annual golf outing and I left another message for him on Friday night. I had no idea how much his sickness had progressed until I received a message from his mom this evening.
Many reading this may have not had the pleasure of meeting Bobby. He was a true gentleman. He was very quite and almost shy
.until it came to sports. The old saying "To know him is love him" rings true. I knew Bobby for 35 years and I and like many other loved him.
Bobby was a great friend and I will miss him dearly. He has been in my life since the 4th grade and his memory will be with me until my last days.

To the family of Bob Rainey,
My Dad died on July 4th of Colon Cancer. He battled for 23 months. Dad was 71. He loved sports and coached football and swimming at Minneapolis Southwest for over 25 years. Dad also was a struggling golfer, but he wouldn't want to be anywhere else on Monday mornings April through October with his group of retired friends. We went one last time on June 23rd and played all 18.
I know you are having a difficult time. Bob was a great sportscaster, and I was shocked and sad to learn of his death yesterday.
My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

To the family of Bob Rainey:
I pray God's comfort for all of you.
It was such a pleasure to turn on the news and see his face. There always was a smile and a burst of energy. He seemed so sincere and it appeared that he was having so much fun at his job. What a blessing to love what you do for a living.
I did not know him personally but his joy was palpable and almost catchy.
I had no idea that he was battling a terrible illness but often wondered what happened to him since I suddenly did not see him anymore on the air. The Twin Cities has suffered a tremendous loss. Some months ago I did an internet search to see if I could find out what happened. Although I am not a sports enthusiast, his absence mattered for some reason.
Again, you are in my prayers.

We are so sorry for your loss, Bob was such a great person to watch so happy and gentle. We never met him but we enjoyed him so much of TV.
I just lost my Brother Jack to cancer on February 14th., he was 66 years old and the nicest person you'd want to know. He was loved by everyone. He was my only Sibling and we were so close so it's been so very hard for our family.
At the funeral someone told me that God needed another good person in heaven, and he only took the best.
So to your family I'll tell you that also. God bless you all.

I met Bob at least once, probably at the Fair and foolishly asked him about his weight loss. He handled my question with class, the kind of class missing in so many people. Hello to you all;
I was sadden to hear of the passing of Bob Rainey. I live in Kentucky, and was able to watch Bob for several years as the weekend sports anchor for the CBS affiliate in Nashville. They made the announcement on their newscast Saturday. I thought that was a class act on their part.

Sincerely,

Bob was not only a devoted and passionate sportscaster but a dear friend to my wife and I. There are countless memories from just the four years we knew him in Minneapolis. He was a blast to hang out with, whether we were eating out on Nicollet Mall, or enjoying summer music late into the night on Peavey Plaza. And since I'm a huge college basketball and baseball fan, Bob would often come over to my place to watch the Final Four and World Series. He was so knowledgeable that I'd often hit the mute button so he could do live play-by-play analysis for me!
Bob was a top-notch broadcast professional, one you could tell loved his job, but more importantly a great friend. Thanks for the memories Bob and to his family for sharing him these past four years. You will be missed.

I think the highest honor that could be paid to Bob Rainey is to say he was always a REAL person. His genuineness and enthusiasm was apparent in every word he spoke. I remember watching him on Sunday nights talk about the Vikings and i would go back the next day and would quote him almost word for word and my co-workers were just amazed at my insight (haha) THANK YOU BOB! Heaven got a new angel yesterday and for those of us left to mourn the loss of Bob, we shall ever remain the lucky ones to have experienced such a wonderful person, sportscaster and role model. My thoughts and prayers go to his family. May they find peace and solace in the fact he was indeed the best of the best!

As ironic as it sounds; I couldn't care less about pro-sports!
But every time he came on Tv, his fair/kind manner of reporting made me a bit more interested in what he was talking about.
He was considerate. A rare quality in this "shock-jockey" world. I hope your current sports-staff borrows those "plays" from him.

Okay, I am one of those women who when the sports come on the television I can think of 89 other things I need to do; put a load of wash in, clean the bathroom, brush my teeth, etc. HOWEVER, when Bob came on I sat mesmerized by those eyes, that smile, that genuiness of manner. He was so enthused by sports that I became so enthused by sports. He was not reporting sports he was relaying sports; a difference I can feel. He was not reporting a game an event, he was living that event. I became a part of that. I grieve our collective loss; the man, the sports moments, but most important the memory of in a world of slick and spin Bob Rainey was the genuine article. How will you ever replace him?

Please accept my sincere condolences for the passing of Bob.
I have only one word to describe him, that is CLASS! He was always prepared, informed, confident and ready to deliver the "perfect sports report". He was always a pleasure to watch.
I know the pain you are feeling. I lost a 20 year old son...it is a pain that cannot be described, it literally tears your heart out. We never get over it, we just learn how to live with it.
My thoughts and prayers are with you. God bless.

We thoroughly enjoyed watching Bob deliver the Sports news. He seemed like such a nice, intelligent guy. Our condolences to his family and to his co-workers at WCCO. He will be missed by everyone for a very long time.

We were sadden to hear about Bob's death. We really understand what it is all about. We lost a wonderful person at age 49 to colon cancer also. Wayne was a great guy and he reminded our family of Bob. Always joking and always an inspiration to other's. We would just like to say we are sorry to the family. Our Prayers are with you all during this difficult time.

Just a quick note to let you know that bob was a kind and genuine guy. I had a little contact with him at the Minnesota Vikings games. bob sat right behind me in the press box. he was professional but yet he would have the time to say "hi" and may an occasional "high five" when the Vikings had a good play or touchdown.
I speculated that he was ill and , but I thought and hoped that he was on the road to recovery. It was a huge shock to read in the paper this morning that bob had passed away.
My sympathy goes out to Bobs family and to his WCCO family as well.

Our heartfelt sympathies to Bob and his family. We have missed him on the show for a long while. When he was back after being gone and looked so thin and not like himself at all, my husband and I knew he was sick. I feel he would have liked the support from friends and fans alike and more prayers wouldn't have hurt. Now he is with God and is announcing the games in Heaven.
With sympathy to all his friends at WCCO and most of all his family,

As a transplanted Kentuckian and having lived in Rochester, NY. I share Bob's love of Tubby Smith, even though my school was the University of Louisville. My husband had the same talent in regard to the naming all the winners of the Kentucky Derby. He said that it was a 'gift' and obviously Bob shared this also. My sympathy to his family and friends.

I met Bob 2 years ago at Epiphany Diner at the State Fair. I saw him sitting, and I recognized him, and he motioned for me to join him. We talked for almost about an hour about every topic under the sun. Some young boys joined us, and of course were enthralled with Bob, as he had his WCCO shirt on. They were like me, realizing what a great guy and how easy that he was to talk to, and asked him as many questions. As I saw, it was typical Class Act Bob, the great guy that really showed in that encounter, laughing and answering all of our questions. Like me, after meeting him in person, I'm sure when they watched WCCO, we all felt like you knew Bob.
Now, as I look back, the many accolades from viewers really make sense to me.
I thought that something may be wrong when I saw him after his absence on WCCO, and I remember my heart sinking. When I heard the news, although I'm not a person who cries much, but I really still tear up when the report and emails from WCCO.
God Bless you, members of Bob's dear family and friends,

To the Rainey Family
My wife and I got the chance to meet Bob at Vikings autographing event at training camp in Mankato a few years ago. He came off as such a nice and genuine guy. We had to laugh as he explained to my wife when she asked for his autograph that he wasn't a Viking, only covering the event for WCCO. Of course she already knew that but it gave us a funny story to share with others.

My heart aches for the family of Bob Rainey. The loss of a child, regardless of age, is equivalent to having your heart ripped out. My 35 year old son died unexpectedly last summer from a brain aneurysm. He was also in television, and what a loss we feel each day. It's not the natural order of things. We are so sorry.

I had the pleasure of meeting Bob when I was 9 years old and Bob was 10. My Dad coached a youth basketball team we played on. I was very happy to find out I had a teammate who was a Vikings fan, and just as happy to find out we had a great player in Bob. Many in Minnesota may not know, but Bob was a standout Football and Basketball player in high school. I was shocked and saddened to read of his death today. I haven't seen Bob in close to 25 years, but knew he was working in Minnesota. Bob and I played sports against each other in high school and he was as gracious an opponent as he was a teammate. He was class guy growing up, and he obviously touched many in his short time in Minnesota. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

We are so sorry to hear of the passing of "Bob". We always enjoyed his reporting. A few years ago when we were walking along Nicollet Mall we recognized him and greeted him and he responded back to us. I would like to commend his Mother for instilling such grace and kindness in her son.
I never met Bob in person but The camera lenses doesn't lie and this was a very special human being.
I lost a son at the age of seven to a heart defect and that was over thirty-six years ago and the loss is still there however I now have a tremendous amount of gratitude for the honor of having him for those seven years, and I know that the memories of a great and kind man that was here way too short a time beat the memories of most who live much longer. The lord takes the best way too young.
You all will be in my prayers.

To Bob Raineys families- both those of his birth and the WCCO family
.. I am deeply saddened to learn of Bob's death. I knew him only by watching him and seeing him reporting the Sports news of the day. I was concerned when he had lost so much weight and saw him at a Vikings game and he was gracious when I said, "Please don't lose any more weight" To which he replied, "That is what my mother says too". I was fearful for him but, of course, had no reason to know of his illness. So, to all of you, who knew him oh so much better than I, I want you to know I am deeply saddened upon hearing of his death and wish to add my sincere wished of sympathy. He was a most fine sports reporter and I was happy to always hear and see him doing the reporting he did so well. May the good Lord make all your memories of him blessed and may He hold you in the palm of his hand. Please know that Bob's place will never quite be filled but always remembered. May God grant you all His peace.
Most sincerely, L'Myra Hoogland of Mankato, Minnesota.

So sorry to hear of Bob's death.. Two weeks ago I thought of him and wondered why he was not broadcasting sports any more. One surely would not have guessed he was ill--he always seemed so happy and pleasant.

I did not know Bob well but I had a chance to meet him and work side by side with him on a few occassions. He was always very friendly and made a lasting impression on me right away. One of the first times I met Bob was at Vikings Training camp in 2005, he took the time to talk to me about my work and offered words of encouragement. From what I could tell he is very good role model for how to treat other people.

I was shocked to see his passing. How can such a nice guy have this happen to him. I am deeply sad to see this and he is in my prayers. I'm not much of a sports fan, but I've seen Bob many times on WCCO. He was such a nice guy. I hope this inspires more people to have colonoscopies done at an earlier age than 50. I am 37 and just had one done. They found 2 polyps that were pre-cancerous. The doc said, "good thing you came in". The only reason I went in was because my sister had polyps. If I waited until I was Bob's age I may have ended up like him. If anyone in your family has the "bad" kind of polyps, then all siblings need to get the colonoscopy done long before age 50. My thoughts and prayers are with you Bob.

I was extremely saddened when hearing the news of Bob's passing. I met Bob 10 months after he started at WCCO. I quickly learned what an amazing and genuine man he was. I happened to be going through a touch time and he was there for me 110%. Unfortunately we lost touch a year or so ago. The last time I saw him I ask about his weight loss. I wish I could have been there for him, as he was for me. My sympathy goes out to his family. He will be missed dearly by many. I am comforted to know that heaven has received a wonderful Angel to watch over us.
He was the best in his field. He made me want to know more about sports because of his enthusiasm. His smile was contagious. One in a million, he was, I am honored to have known him. -----Angela

I, along with so many other sports followers and 'CCO viewers am extremely saddened to learn of Bob's passing. When he first joined the 'CCO staff, you could see the genuine passion he had for sports in his smile and his on air mannerisms. His interaction with his colleagues seemed so natural that I felt he was a friend. It is ironic that he was able to cover the team of his life, the Vikings. But whatever sport or team he was covering, he did it with that infectious smile and a professional persona that few have been so gifted. My sincere condolences to Bob's Mother and Sister and to all of the 'CCO family. May God surround you with his love, spirit and grace. He will be greatly missed but not forgotten

My condolences to Bob's family and co-workers... he was a very nice man and loved the work he did. I became friends with Bob during the time he spent here in Nashville, and was sad when I found out recently how sick he was. My husband and I spent my birthday two years ago in downtown Minneapolis. On the walk back to the hotel after dinner we passed WCCO. We could see Bob Rainey inside working at his desk- even though it had to be past 10 pm that evening. Good Morning,
This morning I'm feeling so-so, but I must do this because it's not about me.
I met Bob, Terri, Dennis, and another one of you guys co-workers one afternoon maybe 2years ago. I was job hunting and I got off the bus on Nicolett right by the WCCO building. I'm a news fanagtic, so I watch all day if I could. I knew who Terri and Dennis was right off the top of my head. The other guy I didn't and Bob I mistaken him for Mark Rosen (sorry), but Bob said wrong tax bracket(smile). And I was like MAN I got the chance to see you guys in person ( you guys are like famous people to me, movie stars that is you know on T.V.). I was so excited I wanted to ask for autographs but didn't to scared. And we all walked maybe 1 block just talking and stuff. I met famous people one of them MR. BOB RAINY.
NICE SMILING AND TALKATIVE. I'LL NEVER FORGET THAT MOMENT. THAT WAS STRAIGHT OR SHOULD I SAY COOL. MY HEART GOES OUT TO HIM, HIS FAMILY, HIS CO-WORKERS AND ALL THE OTHER VIEWERS THAT WILL FOREVER HAVE HIM IN OUR PRAYERS.

My deepest condolences to Bob's family and all at WCCO. I was lucky enough to become friends with Bob as a fellow patient fighting the same type of cancer. I was humbled by his courage, strength and dignity whenever we talked. His smile lit up the room and you could see his warmth in his eyes. Bob raised the bar for what it means to be a gentleman and a very giving human being. He once told me I inspired him, but it is he who has rewritten the book on inspiration. Thank you Bob for inspiring me to fight on! May God bring comfort and peace to his family and friends.

My deepest condolences to Bob's family, friends and co-workers on his untimely death. I suspected there was something terribly wrong when I saw how much weight he lost, but was still shocked to tears when I heard the news. I did not know Bob personally and am not even a big sports fan, but there was something about this gentle giant that drew us all in to enjoy watching and listening to him. His enthusiasm was genuine, his compassion real and his enjoyment of all people and things around him was infectious. His intelligence and sports knowledge was surpassed by none. I have been missing him while he was ill and will continue to miss him. I can't imagine the loss you who knew him personally are feeling right now, but know you are all in our hearts and prayers. My son died two years ago of cancer at age 50 so I do understand the loss his family feels at losing such a young family member and they will be remembered, also.

It is with the sincerest of sympathy for your family that I write this note to you. I enjoyed watching Bob do the sports on WCCO. I am a life long Viking fan as was Bob. I have lived all around the United States, but always remained true to the purple and gold. When Bob came to WCCO, it was wonderful to see how much enthusiasm he showed for our team.
2 years ago, my wife who was 38 at the time, was diagnosed with colon cancer. We moved quickly and she had 1 1/2 feet of her colon removed. My 8 year old daughter and I had to face the possibility that we may loose her. Thankfully we did not. With God's blessing she has remained cancer free. We have also been testing with a Genealogist and found out that our daughter may be genetically predisposed for cancer. She will be getting her first colonoscopy at the age of 16. Hopefully she will stay cancer free.
Once again I would just like to say that I am truly sorry for your loss and wish only the best for family in the future.

I had the pleasure of playing golf with Bob several times here in Nashville. He thought I was a great player - -I'M NOT. I think that was just a way he show his kindness.
When Bob left Nashville to work in MN, he was at the US Amateur Public Championship at Rush Creek in Maple Grove. I serve on the championship committee. To the Rainey family.
I am so sad to hear of your loss. I watched Bob every weekend as I am also such a sports fan.
I will miss Bob on the weekend sports cast for I never missed very many of them. The one thing I will remember about Bob is the fact that I emailed him from the wcco site about a year or so ago after reading his bio and how we wanted to come to the Twin Cities. Why I emailed him I do not know, but I did anyway to welcome him to Minnesota. I never expected to get anything back but for some reason I did. It was about 5 minutes and I received a return email from him saying thank you. We exchanged some emails for about 10 minutes. It was then that I realized that oh my god. This man actually emailed me back and he had no clue who I was. I guess that sums up Bob and what kind of person he is.
Thank you Bob. I will miss you on the weekend and will never forget you.

Bob Rainey was with out a doubt one of the BEST sportscasters in the country. He carried so much passion in all of his stories that you were just drawn to him. I remember sometime last year me and my dad who were and always will be big fans, noticed he didn't look all that well. I emailed him to ask if everything was ok and I know that it may have been out of line and I even told him I knew it probably was, but I just cared you know. He told me he was just doing a weight loss program of some sort so yeah he was definitely very private about it which is definitely understandable. It's just horrible that cancer take away someone that had such a positive impact on so many people. I know that this has to be devastating not only to the viewers, but especially to everyone at WCCO, as well as his family. With all of the Favre news, the latest minor leaguer in the news, training camp starting, and everything else in sports this is just a huge reality check. I can honestly say that watching Bobs enthusiasm doing his job helped make me want to go to college to be a sportscaster as well. I'll definitely miss his reports. Best of luck to everyone trying to cope.

As a sports reporting intern at WCCO in the summer of 2006, Bob took the most time out to teach me all he could and give me pointers. He genuinely seemed to care about me and became a friend over the summer. I will miss Bob and all he stood for.

I was in shock to hear of Bobs passing. He had a quality to him that is rarely matched. His enthusiasm for his job was evident each and every time in every story.
I think we all have gained something from Bob in ways that cannot be matched. Everyone is a little better for having him in our lives. Even if for this brief time and as a Sports Reporter.

Bob and I worked together in Philadelphia in the Sports Department at WPHL-TV. It was a start-up news operation in a very tough news town. There was plenty of pressure to succeed and a fair share of criticism. Bob was never rattled and he never let it affect his personal relationships. Bob and I kept in touch after our Philly days together and he stayed at my house for 3-4 days when he was back in the Philly area to cover a Women's College Basketball Final-4. Bob was always a positive guy, a class act and he always shared with me his strong love for his family and his loyal friends.
Bob, RIP
I'll miss you probably more than I ever shared with you. My thoughts and prayers are with any of you who were lucky enough to be part of his family or extended family.
Take care Robert.

Dear family and friends of Bob,
I'm writing to express my sincere condolences on the loss of an incredible person, Bob Rainey. To his family, my heart and prayers go out to you. I had the privilege of knowing Bob during my own tenure at WCCO. He's a beautiful, wonderful, sensitive, caring and loving person. His smile enough to brighten any day
and his support and encouragement invaluable. I am so sorry he has left you. But I hope you find some comfort in the memories of your years together.
To the WCCO family, whom I know cared deeply for Bob
I also send my thoughts out to you. I know he's been a pivotal part of your newsroom, in his strong friendships and quiet leadership. He's irreplaceable, I know. I'll be thinking of all of you in the "news family" as you endure, together, another painful loss.
All my best to all of you,
Karla Hult, former WCCO reporter

I am so sorry to hear of Bob Rainey's passing. I had noticed his weight loss and hoped it wasn't cancer. I've lost several of my family to different cancers so I can imagine his last weeks. It sounds like he had many friends of 'CCO as well as his family with him. My thoughts are with you all.

I would like to extend my deepest condolences to Bob Rainey's family during this incredibly difficult time. Bob was always so very kind and friendly when we saw each other out in the field. As the "new guy in town" there weren't many familiar faces around town, but when I saw Bob his was a welcome one. He always had a sincere smile to give and a hearty hello to share -- two things that set him apart from the rest.
Bob will be missed. I am honored to have crossed paths with him, even for just a short period of time.

To the Bob Rainey family,
I offer my sincere condolences to you on the untimely passing of Bob.
It was always a pleasure to watch him delivering the sports' news and to see him interacting with his colleagues. If working in Minnesota is something he was happy to be doing, I am glad he was able to work at 'CCO We viewers all benefited from his being here as well. I have been concerned about him for some time and now knowing he was ill, explains why we hadn't been seeing him on air lately. It appears that he was very brave in battling this illness and it is a wonderful commentary that so many kind words are being said about him. God bless you all.

I had not met Bob during my twenty years in Buffalo but because of our Western New York connection, we hit it off shortly after I met him here in Nashville, in my role as announcer for the Nashville Predators.
Bob was a very classy individual, highly intelligent and absolutely consumed by not only the business, but his love of sports. That love was evident in his work.
My sincere condolences to all of his family and friends.

My husband and I extend our deepest sympathy to your family over the loss of your loved one. We were always so impressed by Bob during his broadcasts; the first time I saw him on WCCO I asked my husband who he was...he was so handsome and had such poise and knowledge. We were not aware that he was sick but had noticed he had not been on TV lately and wondered why. He will be missed by so many. Sincerely, Karin J.

To Bob Rainey's Mother and sister,
Sadness, overwhelming sadness. I hope that sadness can be lessened just a little by the pride you must feel in calling him son and brother. Mrs. Rainey, you raised an amazing son. Of course, i only knew him as a TV viewer. But from the first time i watched him on WCCO sports I was hooked. He was such a commanding presence- great voice, delivery, knowledge, humor. He owned the room when he was on camera. It was just a pleasure to see/hear him. One could just sense that he was a class act, a man of integrity. A man who had made his mother proud.
MY deepest sympathy to you at his passing,
Karen

Dear Bob Rainey family and WCCO family ,
I wish I were not contacting you because of one of life's saddest events. Saying goodbye to a loving family member and a good friend .
I have never met Bob, but because of his personality, he made me feel like we were connected. I felt that I was listening to a very knowledgeable friend, tell me all about the days' happening in sports. It was wonderful to listen to Bob give the sports news, and add little stories at times.
I know as family and friends who knew Bob, much more than I, that you will be feeling this for some time to come.
I send my deepest sympathy, and I will be praying for you all. Rest in the ONE, who's arms are big enough to hold us all.
Sincerely,

I am no sports nut, but I found Bob's reporting to be straight forward, yet enthusiastic. He was a real gentle-man in the greatest sense of the word. He will be sorely missed by the Twin Cities community.

To Bob, his family and his "other" family at WCCO:
I am very sorry this day had to happen after he fought so long, in private but with much bravery. As a former member of the Minnesota sports media, I understand that you develop solid friendships with other sports journalists, who you see a handful of times a year. After a few "what's ups" at press conferences and games, you then ask your colleagues about their families, their past and what their lives are all about. Bob was a class act and I enjoyed running into him all over the state.
A family has lost a gentleman and so has WCCO.
God Bless all of you who were in Bob's life for years.

It's sad to read the Bob passed away this morning. He was an inspiration and a reporter I always look forward to during the football season. Every once in a while one spots a person whom you can read very clearly. Bob's voice let you know that he was caring, honest, and non-judgmental. He showed his interest in his what ever he reported....he was real. And now days "real" is something that few reports show. Obviously he was a great person of integrity.
God bless him.

To Bob's family, I'd also like to pass along a funny heart warming story that illustrates Bob's kindness and sense of humor! It is the most popular story among my friends. We call it the "Burger Incident."
I held my first BBQ at my new home and was all about having burgers. The problem? I'm terrible at making burgers. I had never bought hamburger meat packaged like a sausage, so was concerned about how to season them. My friend Sarah told me to just cut it into "burger slices" and then put seasoning on it. So I patted the burgers front and back with Lowry's seasoning
yeh
YUCK!.
Let's just say as we all took our first nasty, salty, disgusting, bite the laughter roared. In walks Bob right on cue, figuring I was up to something. After shaking hands with my Mom and Dad, Bob headed over to the food table. My dear, mischievous, friend Jill said "Bob, can I offer you a burger?"
In movies what ensued would be in slow motion with me yelling NOOOOOO!! I was lunging at Bob to prevent his first bite. I was too late! You could see his face change into a salty pucker -- maybe even a gag. You could tell he was fighting every instinct to just spit it out. But he choked it down. Then he turned to me standing there with a horrified look on my face. He smiled and said "Dawn, sweetie, seriously -- it's really not that bad!" There was a moment of silence, then he winked and gave the rest to my dog! We haven't stopped laughing since
.
I can tell you since that day, every single time there is a burger in my vicinity one of my friends laughs and says God Bless Bob what a great guy! Yes, indeed. I say it again today with a heavy heart and tear in my eye. God bless Bob. What a great guy.

Dear Rainey family,
I am so, so sorry for your loss. I wish I had the words to help you feel better right now but there aren't any.
We lost our parish pastor 7 months ago to colon cancer he was 49 years old. This disease is taking too many of our bright, good people. Perhaps the long term outcome of all of this is to make the public aware to look for this illness even if you are supposed to be too young to have it.
Condolences,
Judy Schneider

This is such tragic news for me. Being a sports photographer in this market, you get to know the other stations' sports staffs pretty well. My thoughts and prayers are with Bob and his family during this most difficult time.

To the Rainey Family, I am very sorry for your loss. I had the privilege of starting a sports reporter job in Minneapolis around the same time that Bob started. We immediately connected and I was fortunate to get out on the golf course a few times with him. Even in the few moments I was able to spend with him outside of work, it was easy to see that it was impossible to be sad, upset or angry when you were around him. I don't think he knew how to frown. Even as he first began his battle, the smile never left. I know he fought it privately and it wasn't something I learned about until just before I left the area about a year ago. I respected his privacy, I respected his courage for battling the disease, but most importantly, I respected him. You are in my prayers. God Bless. Charles Gonzalez KARE Sports 2004-07

To the Family of Bob Rainey and the 'CCO family -
We are deeply saddened to learn of Bob Rainey's death. His absence from the sports newscast desk these past several months has not gone unnoticed; we've missed his warm and inviting presence and his striking delivery of the sports news. He drew me (the female) in to listen to the sports news, although I think that smile I saw in his eyes may have had something to do with that. He has been and will be missed. Our condolences to his family and to his 'CCO family.

My deepest sympathies to the family of Bob Rainey. I enjoyed watching him give his sportscast. You could tell he was genuine and was the same off air as he was on air. His passing is a loss not only to WCCO, but to the entire viewing audience.
