Bicyclist Killed In Crash With Semi-Tractor IDed

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) ― A bicyclist was killed Wednesday morning near downtown Minneapolis in a crash involving a semi-tractor, according to Minneapolis Police.

The accident happened at about 7:40 a.m. near the intersection of 14th Street East and Park Avenue South. There were some road closures in the area for a few hours after the crash while they investigate.

Police said the bicyclist, Dennis Dumm, 31, was dead when they arrived on the scene. He was crushed after being hit by a semi-tractor pulling a large dump box loaded with concrete.

Dumm's girlfriend said he was on his way to work, part of his daily routine.

"He seemed to always be aware of the traffic ... just a real careful rider," said Christi Desautels, Dumm's girlfriend.

Desautels insists that he always wore his helmet, but police said they do not yet know whether he was wearing one at the time of the accident. Police continue to investigate.

They interviewed the semi driver, who stopped after the crash and said he was pretty shaken up.

Another witness who saw it happen was also pretty shaken up.

"All I (saw) was this crushed bike and this guy laying on the ground," Bernice Smith, a witness.

Desautels hopes something good will come from this tragedy.

"Just really watch for bikers," she said.

Meanwhile, the Minneapolis bike community is hoping for a large turnout at a silent ride scheduled Wednesday night.

Jeremy Werst administers an online bicycle forum called Minneapolis Bike Love. He's urging people to participate in the National Ride of Silence, meant to honor and remember cyclists killed or injured during a ride.

The ride was scheduled before a Dumm was killed.

Werst said in an e-mail to members of the forum that he hopes more people will join ride to show their support and solidarity. The ride starts at 7 p.m. at South 34th Street and Lyndale Avenue in Minneapolis.
